Drilling Study Group - Ethics and Moral Reasoning

Note: the presentation will start promptly at 11:45 and will run for approximately one hour, followed by a short Q&A session.  All attendees will earn one professional development hour (PDH) of credit in ethics, which meets the requirements for PE license renewal.

This presentation will describe ethics, introduce moral dilemmas, discuss views on teaching ethics, review some examples related to business, and describe how moral reasoning influences ethical decision making. A short discussion on the three main branches of ethics will be followed by reasons why people may act unethically. Ethics will be shown to be tied to values through individual behavior, which in turn influences morality. Different levels of judgments will be explained, as well as their relationships to moral reasoning. Finally, the presentation will conclude with a real life example.

The aim of the presentation is to cause the participant to think about his behaviors, to understand why others might view the same situation with a totally different perspective, and to offer some insights about why sometime rational people act irrationally … and perhaps even irresponsibly.
