Westside: The Application of Hydrajetting in Horizontal Completions

The Application of Hydrajetting in Horizontal Completions
to Improve Hydraulic Fracturing Treatments

This presentation will review the proven applications of hydrajet perforating during the past 6+ years, specifically as they apply to the fracturing of horizontal and highly deviated wellbores in both oil and gas reservoirs.  One tubing-deployed method that will be discussed involves hydrajet perforating followed immediately by pumping a frac slurry down the tubing and out the jets with no mechanical isolation.  The energy concentrated at the mouth of the fracture intersecting the wellbore creates a dynamic isolation effect thus controlling the fluid entry into the holes being jetted.  As the hydrajetting tool is moved uphole to a new location, the operation is repeated with the fluid dynamics again eliminating the need for mechanical isolation.  Another effective application technique employs a CT string employing CT-hydrajet perforating with the frac slurry pumped down the casing/CT annulus.  In this application, a sand plug is set across each fraced interval and the CT is moved uphole to hydrajet perf the next interval and again frac down the annulus.

A key differentiator with both of these techniques is that large, highly efficient and undamaged perfs can be closely clustered.  It is also observed that lower frac injection rates are adequate to place the desired volume of proppant for each fraced interval.  This is in contrast to a large number of conventionally perforated intervals that may yield multiple individual fracture planes accepting the frac fluid.  By way of balance, the known limitations with hydrajet perforating will be covered by describing the user-friendly applications vs. the more challenging and even incompatible applications of the hydrajetting-fracturing process.
