Drilling Study Group: Suppressing Drillstring Dynamics with Surface and Downhole Data: Recognizing Problems and Finding Solutions

Drill bit and bottom hole assembly vibration causes many drilling challenges.  Without corrective action, a multitude of downhole failures can result, greatly increasing drilling costs.

There are three primary modes of drill string vibration: axial, lateral, and torsional.   This presentation will give an overview of these problems as they are understood today and what can be done about them. A definition and visual representation of each of these is given to set a common definition for the rest of the discussion. The presentation will then explore field and lab observations of each vibration mode and look for the underlying cause and corrective actions for each.

Guidelines for corrective actions will be proposed that can be taken when damaging vibrations are suspected.
