One primary mode of enforcement is the establishm ent of ecotoxicological standards for chemical usage (for example biodegra dation critieria). The current paradigm has been established using methods developed for wastewater treatment and consumer contact, however these la ck the exposure context of oil and gas operations. These standards can be inappropriate in typical oil and gas use and nearly impossible to satisfy for polymeric materials which are widely used in the oilfield and designed to be very robust. This leads to great difficulties in achieving efficien t performance and in some cases reverting to inefficient technologies or d esigning ways to partially achieve the regulatory intent. There should be increased flexibility to allow relevant exposure scenarios in the required testing to appropriately evaluate the environmental impact of a substance . For instance, there is evidence that exposure scenarios such as sunlight in the case of surface release is a critical factor in evaluating the deg radation potential of polymeric materials in particular. Examples of these factors and some suggested methods to design and select polymeric materia ls in the current regulatory schemes will be discussed.--- This iCal file does *NOT* confirm registration.Event details subject to change. ---\r\n\r \n--- By Tendenci - The Open Source AMS for Associations ---\r\n UID:uid5620@spegcs.org SUMMARY:Northside Webinar: Challenging the Paradigms for the Selection and Use of Polymers in Environmentally Sensitive Areas DTSTART:20200211T173000Z DTEND:20200211T190000Z CLASS:PUBLIC PRIORITY:5 DTSTAMP:20240328T093231Z TRANSP:OPAQUE SEQUENCE:0 LOCATION:Webinar - Online or Phone X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:
Environmental stewardship and sustainability are growing concerns around the globe and regulatory en forcement is spreading with these issues. \; One primary mode of enfor cement is the establishment of ecotoxicological standards for chemical usa ge (for example biodegradation critieria). The current paradigm has been e stablished using methods developed for wastewater treatment and consumer c ontact, however these lack the exposure context of oil and gas operations. These standards can be inappropriate in typical oil and gas use and nearl y impossible to satisfy for polymeric materials which are widely used in t he oilfield and designed to be very robust. This leads to great difficulti es in achieving efficient performance and in some cases reverting to ineff icient technologies or designing ways to partially achieve the regulatory intent. There should be increased flexibility to allow relevant exposure s cenarios in the required testing to appropriately evaluate the environment al impact of a substance. For instance, there is evidence that exposure sc enarios such as sunlight in the case of surface release is a critical fact or in evaluating the degradation potential of polymeric materials in parti cular. Examples of these factors and some suggested \;methods to desig n and select polymeric materials in the current regulatory schemes will be discussed.
