In recent times, with an in crease in deeper, hotter, and more complex wells, the Industry has encount ered the limitations of traditional design approaches that often imply eit her the impossibility of design, or force engineers to make subjective com promises in the design. More sophisticated alternative design approaches a re needed, primary among which is reliability-based design.\r\n \r\n This lecture focuses on the application of reliability-based design for comple x wells. Traditional design approaches and their limitations are reviewed briefly. The evolution of design to limit states, as exemplified by the re cent ISO TR 10400 and API TR 5C3 documents for casing and tubing is discus sed in some detail. The rationale for reliability based design is introduc ed. The rigorous statistical basis and the standards that govern the devel opment of reliability based designs are discussed and placed in the contex t of the natural tolerance and aversion of a society to risk. The concept of "\;Design Levels"\; based on the sophistication and probabilist ic nature of the approach is introduced. Finally, it is shown that reliab ility based design approaches are standard in virtually every other struct ural and civil design disciplines, with our industry being a late adopter of this critical enabling technology.\r\n\r\n\n\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n Please register prior to the event to facil itate improved planning and admission.
