Speaker #1 Company: Sustainable Petroleum Solutions LLC

Speaker #1 Bio: Dr. Subhash Thakur is a reservoir engineer and has his own consulting company Sustainable Petroleum Solutions LLC. His areas of expertise include field development planning, reservoir simulation, reserve & economic evaluation, enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration. Previously, he worked for BP in various engineering and multidisciplinary team leadership positions in Tulsa, Calgary, Trinidad and Houston. He holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from India, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado.   Subhash served in the SPE Carbon Capture & Sequestration Committee from 2011-2016 and is currently in a team writing the guidelines for the SPE CO2 Storage Resource Management System (CO2 SRMS).

Speaker #1 Estimating Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Petroleum Exploration and Production There is a growing concern over climate change impacts of GHG emissions from petroleum production, refining and use. The contribution from exploration and production of petroleum (upstream) can be material in complex operations. The upstream emissions vary significantly for different subsurface situations and production processes employed. Well-to-refinery gate (WTR) emissions vary by a factor of 10 from low to high GHG emissions fields. It is important, therefore, for the upstream operators to track GHG emissions. A tool called Oil Production Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimator (OPGEE) will be described which is an engineering-based model that estimates GHG emissions from the production, processing, and transport of crude oil. OGPEE can model primary through tertiary production of crude oil and can be tuned to represent variations in production practices and geology. It also allows estimating reduction of GHG emissions as a result of process changes and to see the effect of the changes within production life cycle. This framework makes it possible to analyze emissions in long-term projects (against a forecasted baseline) when a technology or policy change is implemented.

Speaker #2 Company: Auburn Energy

Speaker #2 Bio: Deborah is a geologist/geophysicist with 43 years of oil and gas exploration experience in the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and Mid-Continent areas of the US.  She received her degree in Geology from the University of Oklahoma in 1976 and immediately started working for Gulf Oil in their Oklahoma City offices. She started her own company, Auburn Energy, in 1990 and built her first geophysical workstation using Kingdom software in 1996. She helped SMT/IHS for 18 years in developing and testing the Kingdom Software. She specializes in 2D and 3D interpretation for clients in the US and internationally. For the past nine years she has been part of a team to study and bring the power of multi-attribute neural analysis of seismic data to the geoscience public, guided by Dr. Tom Smith, founder of SMT.  She has become an expert in the use of Paradise software and has over 5 discoveries for clients using multi-attribute neural analysis. Deborah has been very active in the geological community.  She is past national President of SIPES (Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists), past President of the Division of Professional Affairs of AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists), Past Treasurer of AAPG and Past President of the Houston Geological Society. She is currently the President of the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies and is one of the GCAGS representatives on the AAPG Advisory Council. Deborah is also a DPA Certified Petroleum Geologist #4014 and DPA Certified Petroleum Geophysicist #2.  She belongs to AAPG, SIPES, Houston Geological Society, South Texas Geological Society and the Oklahoma City Geological Society (OCGS).

Speaker #2 Abstract: Re-inventing Yourself to Stay Relevant in an Ever-Changing Geoscience Technical Climate

This is a portion of the history of my career path where technology changes have caused the re-invention of my use of technology, and thus me.  I cover three major paradigm shifts in the last 30 years including: the Digital Transformation, the change from 2D to 3D and now the coming change to Machine Learning and AI.  There are key points to learn from along the path, and those are shared as well. This presentation was originally geared to geoscientists, but I think there are salient points that Engineers and persons transitioning in their career paths can appreciate.  It is good for students looking for work as well as young professionals.
