The next time you see SPE volunteers, tell them “thank you.” Thank them for their tireless efforts to keep this professional organization running. For nearly a century, thousands of dedicated and talented professionals have contributed to the success and growth of the petroleum industry, the petroleum engineering profession, and SPE. This commitment of time and talent is at the heart of a profession and an organization like SPE, and it is important that this select group of individuals receive special acknowledgment for their outstanding achievements and contributions.

By definition, volunteers don’t get paid for their service with SPE. It is very difficult to show volunteers your appreciation, but the simplest way is to tell them, “Thank you for what you do for SPE.” A more formal way is to shower them with awards. Every year, SPE confers international, regional, and section awards for outstanding volunteer service and leadership. The list of previous award recipients is a “who’s who” of the petroleum industry. Recognition with an SPE award is an honor conferred by our peers and recognized by all as a true mark of distinction.

Please join me on May 11 at the annual SPE Gulf Coast Section Awards Banquet, where Mayor Bill White will be our keynote speaker as we honor our volunteers, special award winners, and scholarship winners. In the meantime, if you see Susan Howes, tell her, “Thank you!” This year Susan has volunteered to take on the difficult task of compiling the SPE Gulf Coast Section Annual Report. The baton was passed to Susan by Sid Smith Sr., who spent many years as our designated report creator. The annual report is used by SPE International to select the President’s Award for Section Excellence. Our Section has won this award 7 years in a row and is striving for the eighth. Much of this success can be attributed to the tireless efforts of Sid Smith Sr., and now Susan Howes, who have both spent countless hours preparing our report. The report is also used by other sections around the world as a source of best practices. The Gulf Coast Section is the largest SPE section in the world, and we lead by example in our dissemination of technology and service to the community. Take pride in your home section and be sure to thank the volunteers who make it such a grand success!

Thank you for what you do for SPE.
