Chairman's Corner April 2011

Sometimes in life we reach a point where we feel tired and at times hopeless. It is easy for issues and struggles in life to cause us to lose focus and result in losing sight of the resolve we seek. I wish to encourage the GCS leadership to stay the course. In order to be great leaders, we must stay focused on our resolve and understand that leadership is a gift, a function, a responsibility, and a legacy. Know that leadership is a gift, and not all are called for this higher purpose. For those who are, it is important to understand that it is a blessing to be called to serve others at a higher level. Leadership is a function, not all have the same set of skills, but all can exercise influence in some way, and everyone leads …

Chairman's Corner March 2011

In January, I shared that ‘one person with a commitment can generate interest to more than 100 people’. What was meant to be said was that ‘one person with a commitment can produce more than 100 people with an interest’. The more commitment one has, the more likely one will make an impact. The question becomes where does commitment come from? The answer is passion. My message this month is about passion, and the direction of Gulf Coast Section educational initiatives. Passion is closely intertwined with fierce resolve, the second half of servitude leadership. It is an intense driving, deeply stirring desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept. It comes from within the heart, and is the difference between frustration and serenity. Passion is behind the energy of greatness. People with passion live in the ‘now’ and …

Then and Now - March 2011

March 1981 Soviet Premier Brezhnev’s energy message to the Communist Party Congress is to continue producing oil from western Siberia primarily for export and for the Russians themselves to expand coal, gas, and nuclear energy production for domestic consumption. $ Occidental Chief Armand Hammer reports that the U.S. could help Mexico double its oil production in 3-5 years and hike exports to the U.S. from 700,000 BOPD to 2 million BOPD, thus leading to a dramatic shift in U.S. dependence on Middle East sources. $ St. Thomas Island’s fragile economy appears to be on the bubble, as Amerada Hess threatens to shut down its St. Croix refinery, the world’s largest, if St. Thomas does not back down from its proposed tax levies. $ A number of major operators launch efforts to diversify into minerals, namely Standard Oil of Ohio’s bid …

Chairman's Corner February 2011

My message for this month is focused on growing wisdom through building relationships within SPE. Remember that servitude leadership is defined as “humility plus fierce resolve,” and last month I shared that “humility plus knowledge is wisdom.” The proper definition of “wisdom” is the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships, and “to discern” is to detect something using means other than the eyes, or to understand the differences between such things as right and wrong, or good versus bad. Every day we are faced with choices. We’d like to believe that most of our decisions are wise ones, but due to our imperfect nature, we may at times make some unwise decisions along the way. The resulting consequences could have life-changing or devastating consequences. So, my dear colleagues, my challenge to each of you is to make better decisions …

February 1951 Advertising Age, a magazine that keeps tabs on periodicals of all kinds, reports that in 1950 the magazine with the most total pages of advertising was not Life or Saturday Evening Post but the Oil and Gas Journal. $ A survey of the most frequently misspelled words in both general and technical writing revealed the following oft-misspelled words: accommodate, occurred, accelerated, embarrass, separate, desiccant, interpret, incidentally, affects and effects, benefited, changeable, fulfill, grievous, harass, indispensable, noticeable, occasioned, parallel, permissible, precede, referred, seize, supersede, recommend, commitment, descent, existence, prejudice, proceed, stationary, dependent, exaggerate, principle and principal, serviceable, borne, iridescent, furthest, and sizable.
