Picture a large conference room with microphones for every pair of participants and individual name placards set on tables configured in a formal U-shaped arrangement for about 50 people. The SPE president 2005, president 2006, president elect 2007, and the vice president of finance are seated at the head table. The meeting is conducted formally using Robert’s Rules of Order, with opening comments such as “Madam President, I make a motion that…” followed by lengthy proposals. No, this isn’t the United Nations, and all business is conducted in English without the benefit of simultaneous translation. This is the final session of the SPE International board of directors meeting in Moscow. The SPE International board of directors meets in live sessions three times per year. One meeting is held in conjunction with the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), and the …
It is said all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Although a lot of business was conducted during three full days of work sessions, board members James Pappas, Janeen Judah, and Susan Howes managed to take in some interesting sight seeing in the afternoons— this was the first trip to Russia for each. The group toured the sites open to the public at the Kremlin, but Red Square was off limits because of a Pink Floyd concert scheduled that evening. They strolled past some of the official buildings and President Putin’s office to two Russian Orthodox Cathedrals, inside which several patriarchs and czars were buried. A nearby park featured a massive 30-foot tall bell that had been built specifically to ring in the coronation of Catherine the Great. Next the SPE board members visited the Armory Building, …

A friend of mine tells a story of a discussion between him and his mother when he was 6 years old. “Mom, I’m bored,” he said. “Son, that just means that you''re boring,” she replied. Ouch! It sounds harsh, but his mom was trying to make a very specific point. If you’re bored with your current situation, then do something about it. Don''t just sit around being “boring” by doing nothing. Many of us take introspective assessments of our lives and think that things could be better. You may have even identified that you are somewhat bored. Many of us have diagnosed ourselves with boredom but cannot explain why. After all, oil prices are high, activity is booming, and everyone is busy. How can any of us possibly be bored? I’ll argue that this boredom results from a pattern of …
The Society of Petroleum Engineers Gulf Coast Section has helped place many of its scholarship recipients in summer internships during the past few years. Internships give the students hands-on experience in the petroleum industry and an idea of what daily engineering work is like. This experience makes our scholarship recipients greater assets as new hires to the companies that employ them after graduation. These internships benefit both the students and your companies. To follow through with our commitment to encourage high school seniors to enter the petroleum field, the SPE GCS works to place many of these students in jobs during the summer before they start college. This year we anticipate having a large number of our scholarship recipients interested in summer internships. We ask you and your companies for help in placing these students in summer jobs. Please consider …
Thank you to all who attended our Gulf Coast Section Awards Banquet earlier this month at the beautiful Rice Hotel in downtown Houston. Those in attendance were treated to a wonderful talk from the Honorable Mayor Bill White. Mayor White gave the new scholarship winners some words of wisdom, and with a landslide win of 91% of voters in the mayoral election there were some keen ears in the crowd. Amongst the night’s events was the SPE - Gulf Coast Section Scholarship and Houston SPE Auxiliary winners. High school seniors from around the area received their scholarships to various engineering colleges.
