Chairman''s Corner January 2007

Support for Education The Gulf Coast Section has a long history of supporting education.  Perhaps the program that stands out the most is our scholarship program.  Last year the Board voted to increase our scholarship program to up to $110,000 a year by increasing the number of deserving students we help.  Over the years the Section, along with the SPE Auxiliary, has given over a million dollars in scholarships.  This is an accomplishment we can indeed be proud of.    Actually, the Section supports education at all three levels – K-12, university and post-graduate. Elementary through high school.  Our support for K-12 education includes several programs.  We provide funding to Community in Schools Houston, which is a nonprofit, Houston-area dropout prevention program based in the Heights.  Sid Smith, Sr. is our contact.  We support the Science and Engineering Fair Houston …

Then and Now - January 2007

January 1957 A lush new field for mystery novels and extravaganzas is opened up by news of the theft of oil maps from Gulf Oil Corp. At last…a wholesale distributor of automotive supplies advertises a revolutionary new “fuel” made from water plus Chemical X. With a retrofitted “fuel kit”, the motorist will be able to make his own fuel for use in any combustible engine. (Just wait until RONCO gets a hold of this one.) If you have been wondering how the oil industry was being viewed by the Government, wonder no more. A recent recommendation by the Bureau of the Budget was to combine all statistics for the previously classified “Products of Coal and Petroleum” into a group called “Chemicals and Allied Products.” Obviously the Government was no more help to the oil industry back then than it is …

Nominate an SPE Colleague for an Award

According to 2007 SPE President Jaleel Al-Khalifa, “As one of the Society’s themes for 2007, we wish to put people first and celebrate those members whose outstanding contributions within the region have helped make this Society so successful.”   Two years ago, the SPE Board of Directors voted to expand SPE''s regional awards programs.  With a large and geographically diverse membership, SPE recognizes that many worthy contributions to the technology and image of our industry are made worldwide.  While SPE presents a number of honors and awards that are society-wide, there was a strong desire to recognize more contributors.  This was accomplished through an expansion of the regional awards program. Take the time to nominate and document a deserving colleague or section member for any one of the several SPE Regional Awards.  The nomination forms and eligibility criteria are posted online …
