This post-World War II economic theorem stated that in good times almost everybody cared for their teeth and promptly paid their dentist. However, in periods of recession, people tended to let their teeth go until they had to have expensive emergency dental work done at which time they were very slow in paying their bills. $ Would you believe that there is gas production in offshore New York? Yep…a commercial gas-producing wildcat in Lake Erie. $ Senator Lyndon Johnson throws out a novel approach for controlling imports. His plan would require any foreign country seeking a share in the U.S. market to meet agreed-upon standards of freedom for its citizens, to split its profits …

Then and Now - October 2008

October 1958 Oilfield hands continue to reflect on the industry’s worst blowout in history near High Island, where for a time all wells tied to the platform went wild as a result of the explosion damaging all of the closely spaced wellheads. $ Venezuelan oil attaché Eduardo Acosta tells an SEG convention that his country is striving to meet its obligations to establish greater reserves for the defense of the western hemisphere. (And Oh by the way, Venezuelan oil is really domestic oil and should be given preferential treatment in any U.S. oil import control program.) $ Speaking of countries that are looking after the U.S.’ best interests, Libya is reportedly close to delineating its first oilfield, thanks to the efforts of a U.S.-based operator consortium. $ The Engineers Joint Council reports that all 1958 engineering graduates had jobs or …

Then and Now - September 2008

September 1958 A harbinger of things to come…Communist influence in Venezuela is reportedly growing and control of its critical oil industry is likely high on the list. (In another 40 years it will all culminate in Hugo calling the shots.) $ Interest in pursuing once-promising oil zones in northeastern Montana begins to fade. (Too bad that a time-traveling driller could not return to this era and drill one of them new-fangled horizontal wells in the Bakken.) $ Petrobras is reportedly close to obtaining much-needed long-term financial aid from ENI. (What a difference 50 years has made for the Brazilians.) $ An interesting cooperative water flood project kicks off in California…While Shell and Union independently flood adjacent leases, four injection wells are used to build a water barrier to protect against migration of oil across the lease line.
