Northside - Well Control Prevention and Response for Unconventional Wells

The presentation will cover the prevention of and response to critical well control issues for unconventional wells (in other words: horizontal multi-zone drilling from multi well pads).  The main concern of multi well pad blowout and fire is the cascade effect, where a one well blowout becomes a multi well blowout due to failure of containment on nearby wells either due to radiant or direct heat.  Techniques and technologies used to prevent these multi well fires are valve orientation, wellhead auditing, radiant/direct heat analysis (conjoined with barrier placement), proper simultaneous operations (SIMOPS), usage of Sub-Surface Safety Valves (SSSVs), etc.  The presentation will move into a real-life step-by-step description of the equipment and personnel expertise required to solve a large multi well fire. To wrap up, the subjects of ‘frac hits’ and critical well services (gate valve drilling, freezing, and hot tapping) will be touched upon and their relation to well control for unconventional wells.
