An Overview of SPE's Climate Change Strategy
On March 7, 2016, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Board of Directors formed a Climate Change Task Force to develop and recommend a strategy for the SPE regarding climate change. The Task Force was further charged to identify key aspects and public perceptions of climate change, research what analogous professional organizations have done in relation to climate change, and to recommend actions, if any, for SPE to take.
Recent developments in climate change policy such as The Paris Agreement developed at COP21 present a new landscape of opportunities and challenges for SPE and its members. The Paris Agreement over the course of the 21st century is expected to bring change. It has the potential to support ongoing efforts in the industry to reduce methane emissions through improved energy efficiency. The Paris Agreement also has the potential to usher in changes for SPE members through the deployment of carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), further accelerate the use of natural gas as an alternative to coal, change the loading on infrastructure as natural gas becomes an essential component of a more flexible power generation system, and push oil into different markets as it is displaced from some of its current uses, such as transportation.
This presentation will provide an overview of the strategy that the SPE Board of Directors approved at the March 2017 Board meeting in Bangkok, Thailand.
