Permian Basin Study Group: Production Assurance through a Chemical Delivery System

Production Assurance involves the economical flow of hydrocarbons from reservoir to the point of sale.  This requires effectively preventing / handling solid deposits which can be both organic and inorganic in nature.  These deposits can cause catastrophic blockage in pipelines, proppant packs and wellbores. Financial loss from production interruption or asset damage can be astronomical and the industry spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year to remediate. To prevent organic/ inorganic deposits and lost production time inhibitor chemicals are delivered downhole via tubulars and as an additive to fracturing fluids. A new delivery system is an infused and encapsulated porous ceramic proppant. The chemical is infused into proppant and pumped as a blend in normal proppant. Typical treatments are designed to last for years of production. This treatment lifetime, however, can be altered to accommodate for longer or shorter periods of time. The delivery system allows inhibitor chemicals to be released at a slow rate when the proppant comes in contact with production and results in a highly efficient, reservoir based chemical delivery system.
