The SPE Members in Transition Seminar Series is designed to include a selection of topics of interest to SPE members who are transitioning in between jobs during the current industry downturn or who are looking for new career opportunities.  The agenda for the fifth seminar in the series will include:  “Review of courses offered by University of Houston Small Business Development Center”, “Negotiation & Conflict Resolution - Proven techniques to achieve a win/win solution”,  “An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Attracting Startup Capital” and a “Discussion of Resources for SPE Members”.

 

Review of resources offered by University of Houston Small Business Development Center:  The University of Houston, Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be presenting on the business advising services and business workshops available to all entrepreneurs in the SBDC network.

 

Negotiation & Conflict Resolution - Proven techniques to achieve a win/win solution:

While we may not always be aware of it, we negotiate and resolve conflict every day.  This workshop will introduce you to a practical, user friendly approach to negotiation and conflict resolution known as the mutual gains model.  As we explore the seven elements of the mutual gains negotiation framework, you will learn to: Prepare for all types of negotiations; Identify the issues at the heart of a conflict; Seek solutions that benefit all parties in a negotiations and Measure the results of your negotiation.

 

An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Attracting Startup Capital:

With his combined education and experience, Tom Powell has been able to lead several companies through cyclical market growths and contractions for maximum profitability. Tom is passionate about free enterprise and international trade, based on his expertise as an innovative investment manager with particular expertise in credit risk analysis, distressed debt recovery, and deal structure. Tom understands the practical application of money management in response to risk on both Wall Street and Main Street. With his combined education and experience, Powell has been able to lead several companies through cyclical market growths and contractions for maximum profitability.

Tom Powell is a leading financier with expertise in investment banking, commercial banking, mortgage banking, alternative asset management, corporate finance and governance. Powell’s background includes a proven track record in raising private and institutional capital, investment and credit risk analysis, risk mitigation, portfolio management, distressed debt recovery, and deal structure.  Powell’s career began in 1988 in Silicon Valley at Wells Fargo Bank, where he was named the youngest Vice President in the Company’s then 140-year history.  Most recently, Powell founded and successfully grew a diversified private investment company, Resolute Capital Partners (f/k/a ELP Capital), an alternative investment firm specializing in serving middle market borrowers and real estate developers. Tom is an international guest lecturer and has served as an instructor in the Office of Executive Education at Harvard University. He has been active with Boys and Girls Clubs of America for over 30 years, first as a youth, then as a local board member and then as a National Trustee and Executive Committee leader. Tom is a healthy lifestyle/outdoor enthusiast and works as a professional ski instructor for Vail Resorts and is a cycling aficionado in the off-season.
