A MESSAGE FROM SPE-GCS EDUCATION CHAIR AND SCHOLARSHIP FUND COORDINATOR, SIMEON EBURI

Giving back to the community in general is very rewarding. I have always enjoyed volunteering with SPE-GCS at various community outreach and community service events.  Giving back resources so that others can have the opportunity to pursue their dreams through education is also extremely rewarding. I personally have a great appreciation for scholarship donations because I was very fortunate to receive scholarships in college from various donors without which, I would not have been able to afford the cost of higher education and earn my degrees.
Like our SPE-GCS Chair, Dr. Ivor Ellul, said in the Chair’s Corner message in the December GCS Connect newsletter, SPE-GCS has been supporting education for more than 30 years in the form of scholarships for promising local students. The graph below shows how we have increased our scholarship funding over the last 15 years to keep up with the rising cost of tuition. The main objective of our scholarship program is to increase interest in the oil and gas industry among graduating high school seniors and help retain college students currently enrolled in petroleum-related academic disciplines. Additionally, the SPE-GCS partners with Communities in School Houston (CISH) to help serve at-risk students in the Greater Houston area.

The impact of our scholarships on those fortunate to receive them has been extraordinary. I have no doubt that those scholarships have changed a lot of lives and have made many dreams become reality. We have gathered testimonials from past scholarship recipients that you can read at the bottom of this page to hear directly from their experience and see the impact of the scholarships on their personal lives and professional careers.
We have launched an initiative to build a Scholarship Fund. The objective is to develop a financial endowment of $5 to $6 million to fund our annual scholarship disbursements, rather than using our Section’s operating expenses as we do today. What we ask our SPE-GCS members and associates is to join us in this campaign and help us raise funds to support the future of our industry through scholarships. No donation amount is too small, and every little help can go a long way towards changing the lives and fortunes of the next generation of oil and gas industry professionals. Here are some options:
  • Voluntary contributions when registering for each SPE-GCS activity.
  • Individual donations at whatever level – a commitment of $16,000 ($4,000 for 4 years) will secure a “named” scholarship.
  • Distributions from endowments, trusts, and estate funds.
As SPE-GCS Education Chair and Scholarship Fund Coordinator, I promise to maintain you well informed of our progress during the campaign, answer any questions you may have and to appropriately highlight and celebrate all our donors. To make a donation, please download the Scholarship Donation Form or Donate Online. All donations are tax-deductible.
Thank you in advance for your support!
Sincerely,
Simeon
