2012 Houston Area Engineer of the Year - George King

Houston Engineer of the Year SPE is proud to announce that our candidate for Houston Engineer of the Year, George King, Global Technology Consultant at Apache, was selected out of a field of candidates submitted by other local engineering societies and will be honored at an awards banquet on Feb. 23, 2012 at Minute Maid Park. George began his career at the Amoco Tulsa Research Center in 1971 after earning a BS in Chemistry from Oklahoma State. He went on to earn a BS in Chemical Engineering and an MS in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Tulsa, where he later taught night courses as an adjunct professor. After BP bought Amoco, George was honored as one of only five BP Distinguished Advisors worldwide. For SPE he has been a Distinguished Lecturer, chaired an Annual Meeting, taught short courses, and won the 2004 SPE Production Operations Award. We interviewed George about his career achievements. Young Professionals - Call for Papers

If you are a young energy industry professional (less than 10 yrs experience), please submit a paper of a project that you did or have made significant progress on to present at the EEC. The EEC is the most highly attended conference among young professionals in SPE-GCS. This paper contest will provide excellent networking opportunities, as well as promote project exposure, and build presentation and public-speaking skills among SPE YP members. Qualifying finalists will be notified by May 22nd; Finalists must be able to present their papers June 4th-5th at the EEC conference at BHP Billiton (1330 Post Oak Houston, TX 77056). If your paper is selected the final judging will be based on your presentation.

Submission Deadline: Friday, May 8th (for the paper) and May 29th, 2009 (for the presentation)

SPE Gulf Coast Section supports Greater Houston Red Cross Hurricane Recovery

Society of Petroleum Engineers donates $10,000 to the Disaster Relief Fund after Hurricane Ike. The SPE International and SPE Gulf Coast Section contributed $5000 each in a one time donation to the efforts to help support the Gulf Coast area in the most recent disaster. This is part of a new initiative by the SPEI and local sections to respond directly to the needs of their members and help grow their community. This coming spring will include a volunteerism day organized by the SPEGCS to provide members the opportunity to donate their time and resources back to the community. Hiep Vu 2007 Young Engineer of the Year

The SPE Gulf Coast Section proudly honors Hiep Vu as the 2007 Young Engineer of the Year. Hiep is a senior production engineer for Shell International E&P in the EPT Subsea and Pipelines Organization. His current responsibilities include front-end engineering, detailed design, material selection, and on-site execution of completion operations for subsea wells in the Gulf of Mexico.A member of SPE since entering college in 1991, Vu is currently the SPE GCS vice-treasurer and will become Section treasurer in2007–08. He has been active in the Section with previous roles as the Emerging Leaders Program chairman, GCS board director-at large,Executive Committee member, Audit Committee member, Nomination and Succession Planning Committee member, director of Educational Sponsors for the Golf Committee, and member of the new ad-hoc Education Committee.He has been involved with SPE’s local high school recruiting efforts as well as in various roles with SPE’s collegiate initiatives (ATCE Petrobowl,Regional and International Student Paper Contests). A recipient of the SPE Amarillo Petroleum Section scholarship, Vu earned a BS degree in petroleum engineering from Texas Tech University in 1995.
