Global production of produced water is nearly 90 billion barrels per year. This water is generally considered to be a non-revenue fluid, yet it can have considerable value as an enhancer of oil production. Produced water needs to be handled and treated effectively to minimize injection or disposal costs and meet environmental requirements. In this talk, three interactive aspects of produced water treatment will be discussed: water chemistry; process hardware; and chemical treatment. To design new water treatment systems or to diagnose problems with existing systems, basic tenets must be followed: know the contaminants to be removed; avoid process recycle streams; and compensate for upstream process operations and chemical injection. The successful use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to design water treatment equipment will be illustrated. In addition, the diagnosis and resolution of actual, challenging water treatment problems will be discussed as examples of how the application of fundamental information can be used beneficially, thus saving time, money, and aggravation for operating companies.

The key message is that in order to design and operate a water treatment system that performs reliably and effectively, it is essential to understand and integrate the fundamentals of system chemistry, process operations, and equipment design.

The SPE-GCS Young Professionals Committee is hosting their 8th Annual PetroBowl in conjunction with the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) on Monday, October 5, 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Please note your team will be responsible for all travel expenses, and if required your team will be soley responsible for collecting the appropriate permission to enter the country. The PetroBowl is a free event to attend and compete in, but we cannot provide any monetary support or assistance to gain entry into the country. Registration for the 2009 competition is now being accepted online. Teams will not be able to register via e-mail. ONLY the first 16 teams to respond by the registration deadline will be guaranteed a spot. Teams registering after spots are filled will be placed on a waiting list. All interested schools must submit their completed registration online by May 31, 2009.

After your registration has been accepted, we will contact you for additional information regarding your team members. At that time we will provide you with final information about what room the event will be held in and what time the event will start (typically 8 AM). We will also provide a final set of rules and request a final team member list.

Wind Power is an up-and-coming technology that is finding its way offshore. Turbines have grown and become more efficient, allowing them to be economically placed in ever deeper waters. In the European North Sea, ideal winds combined with political conditions have led to a recent boom in development and construction activities in the offshore wind sector.

The Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm is scheduled to come online in mid 2010. The field consists of 140 wind turbines and two hub platforms to be installed off the eastern seaboard of the United Kingdom. Once in place, the field will be the largest development of its type in the UK, generating 504MW of electrical power.

Heerema has been part of the design and execution team for the Greater Gabbard field as well as several other developments. In this presentation, we will attempt to give an overview of the offshore wind business, its challenges, and potential through a case study of the Greater Gabbard Farm.

TSPE Greater Houston Chapter - Leadership Committee will host Mr. Elbert W. Link, P.E., F.NSPE on June 24, 2009 at the HESS Club at 5:30 PM. Mr. Link will speak about Engineering Ethics which will be eligible for 1 PDH hour on Ethics.

Speaker Bio:
Elbert W. Link, P.E., F.NSPE joined the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) in 1976 when he returned to this country from overseas, and has been active ever since. He has held every office at the chapter and state level, and was a National Director for three years. He was installed as State President in June 1999. Link was selected as the Engineer of the Year for the Greater Houston Chapter and State of Texas in 2001. He is currently the Chair of the Ethical Practices Committee of TSPE and holds the membership grade of Fellow, NSPE.

Mr. Link has worked over 20 years in the private sector consulting engineering and served 22 years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Link is a graduate of Rice University with a BS degree in architecture. He holds a Masters in Civil Engineering from Stanford University.

Volunteer Request: Earth Science and Energy Education - A Summer Institute for Teachers

The Environmental Institute of Houston (EIH) / UH Clear Lake (UHCL) has partnered with the SPE-GCS to host the third annual

‘Earth Science and Energy Education: A Summer Institute for Teachers’

The three primary goals of these summer development workshops for Houston-area 4^th-8^th grade science teachers are to:

1) Train/educate teachers in aspects of geology, earth science, environmental science, and energy content areas

2) Provide participants with lessons/materials for classroom integration

3) Link workshop topics with student career considerations.

The SPE-GCS is currently requesting member participation in workshop activities on June 25 and July 16, 2008. Specifically, we are asking SPE members to participate as morning ‘Career Booth Custodians’, representing the following general disciplines/professions (1-2 members needed per discipline/profession):

· Petroleum Geology

· Geophysics

· Drilling

· Completions/Production Engineering

· Projects/Facilities/Construction

· Reservoir/Production Engineering

· Safety/Environment

· Land/Legal/Commercial

· Alternative Energy

· Academia

Please note that participation requires very little pre-work/preparation – the goal is to teach the teachers through informal discussions about your discipline and career path. Further description of volunteer activities/duties are attached to this e-mail.

If you would like to participate (or know others who might), please forward us contact information and discipline/profession preference by COB Friday, June 12, 2008.
