Annual Young Inventors’ Showcase at the Children's Museum of Houston

The Young Inventors’ Showcase of Houston encourages the budding inventor in every child by providing a platform for children to share and celebrate their invention ideas. Throughout the year, children are invited to participate by developing a completely original invention or making improvements to an existing invention. The Young Inventors’ Showcases will be held at hosting regional showcases at local schools around Houston. Students from K - 8th grades will be presenting projects that need support as a judge or volunteer.

During the city-wide 24th Annual Young Inventors’ Showcase will be held on Saturday, May 19th, 2012 at the Children's Museum of Houston, the very best of these inventions will be showcased and judged for their ingenuity and merit. This Showcase takes place at the Children’s Museum of Houston highlighting the efforts of Houston-area children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Winners are awarded by grade level and the grand prize winner receives the services of a patent attorney to research and request a patent for the invention.

The Children’s Museum of Houston is looking for qualified judges and other volunteers for the 2012 Young Inventors’ Showcase. The Young Inventors’ Showcase is an opportunity for students in Pre-K to eighth grade to participate in regional invention exhibits at a city-wide invention showcase at the Children’s Museum.

The showcase encourages the budding inventor in every child by providing a platform for children to share and celebrate their invention ideas. Throughout the year, children are invited to participate by developing a completely original invention or making improvements to an existing invention. During the city-wide 24th Annual Young Inventors' Showcase, the very best of these inventions will be showcased and judged for their ingenuity and merit. Winners are awarded by grade level and the grand prize winner receives the services of a patent attorney to research and request a patent for the invention.

Judges and Volunteers will be looking for:

Judges and other volunteers are needed to help provide a successful event at the city-wide showcase.The showcase will take place on Saturday, May 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Children's Museum of Houston.

Diagnostic fracture injection testing (DFIT) is an efficient way to derive in-situ information in many rock types. With this technique, a modestly-sized hydraulic fracture is created in the target interval (pay zone or bounding interval) and pressure fall-off during the shut in period is analyzed to identify fracture closure and an after-closure radial flow period. Injection rate and volume are tailored for interval thickness and leak-off characteristics.

Identification of fracture closure is based on derivative-based diagnostic plots and provides information on rock stress. As well, non-ideal fracture propagation (e.g., fracture height growth, fissure opening, multiple fracture closures) can be identified and evaluated.

After-closure analysis is used to derive rock transmissibility (kh/u) and initial reservoir pressure (p_i.) Radial flow is identified and evaluated by type curves and specialty plots.

The parameters derived in DFIT analysis are used to model fracture propagation and optimize fracture design for the indicated reservoir characteristics, and to provide information for reservoir modeling and production forecasting.

The presenter will describe the basic theory and practice of DFIT analysis. Field examples from various locations, completion types and reservoir systems, including shale gas, unconsolidated sand and low-pressure reservoirs, will be reviewed to describe test design and interpretation.

Williams’ Kirk Blackim and Ross Conatser will share their insight on the rapidly expanding marketing options for the increasing bounty of Western Pennsylvania Marcellus and Eastern Ohio Utica gas and NGL production. The popular format of a Business & Social Networking hour, with complimentary Hors’ D’ Oeuvres and a cash bar, followed by an hour-long program, will begin at 5:00 pm in the Mezzanine.

Production from the Pennsylvania Marcellus shale averaged 1.7 BCFED during the last half of 2011. With continued drilling and over 1000 wells shut-in or still uncompleted, the surge in production is expected to continue - slowed but not stopped by diminished natural gas prices. Next door in Ohio, the Utica shale is just getting started, fed by the desire for high value liquids production that is undeterred by gas prices. How will producers find an outlet with markets for this bounty? What are the infrastructure needs? How fast can they be made available? What will be the combination of domestic and foreign (export) markets? How will they be brought to bear?

Williams’ Kirk Blackim and Ross Conatser will discuss the infrastructure needs in general, with specific insight on Williams’ Atlantic Access proposal. That project is planned to connect natural gas supplies originating in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia to Williams’ Transco pipeline, providing customers from the Atlantic Seaboard to the Gulf Coast with access to new, abundant natural gas reserves by late 2014.

The need to produce oil and gas efficiently, economically and in an environmental-friendly manner has promoted the development of long extended reach horizontal and multilateral wells, which enable greater reservoir contact and lower draw-downs to achieve similar rates as conventional wells. However, this increased wellbore length has led to uneven drawdown distribution along such a well, often leading to early break-through of water or gas, and causing reduction in oil recovery and uneven sweep of the drainage area. The problem becomes more severe when a heterogeneous reservoir is involved.

To eliminate this problem, flow control devices have been used widely as a part of completion to control and optimize individual well or overall reservoir performance. The purpose of flow control devices is to equalize inflow along the length of the wellbore regardless of location and permeability variation; thus, the entire length of the wellbore can contribute to the total production and, thereby, optimize hydrocarbon recovery. They also help prevent annular flow that can often lead to plugging and erosion of screens. Inflow control devices are choking devices that balance inflow by adding an additional pressure drop at the sandface. They are designed to apply a specific deferential pressure at a certain flow rate. The presentation will investigate how and when an inflow control device should be used. Two conditions that result in uneven flow distribution, wellbore pressure drop and heterogeneity of the formation will be addressed. The focus will be on when and how an inflow control device can optimize production. Examples at field conditions will be used to illustrate that it is critical to understand the reservoir conditions and wellbore dynamics together when designing a well completion with inflow control devices. Since uncertainty of reservoir conditions always exists, backup plans and conservative designs are desirable. The observations from this study show that over-designed inflow control devices will not just increase the cost of well completion, but also impact the well performance detrimentally.

Light-oil air injection is a well-developed technology that has broad applications in deeper, hotter reservoirs that are good gas-injection candidates. Modern air injection technology has been developing for over 30 years and has a record of decades of safe operation. The technique is practiced where the reservoir temperature is at least 75°C and gravity override can be controlled either with low-permeability or gravity stability. As in any gas injection project, it is best to operate with high reservoir pressure so as to maximize solubility of flue gas in the oil.

This is one of the conditions needed to make air or rich-air injection a practical process for heavy oil recovery. The purpose of heavy-oil in-situ combustion is to reduce the oil’s viscosity by heating the oil. However, an oil’s viscosity can be reduced by a factor of ten when gas dissolves in the oil at high-reservoir pressure. This occurs ahead of the heated zone and stops gas override that can caused early oxygen breakthrough in old, shallow, in- situ combustion projects. Performance of deep, in-situ combustion projects can also be improved when water is coinjected with the air because steam generates during combustion the reservoir and expands the low viscosity region. Thus, high-pressure in-situ combustion could have wide application for recovery of deeper or offshore heavy oils.

An extended-reach litmus test is on the horizon, as Benton Oil & Gas receives California state approval to drill as far out as 3.5 miles under the Santa Barbara Channel using an onshore drill site. $$ Meanwhile, Conoco receives a permit from the state of Utah to drill on a state lease in Reese Canyon in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument on leases Conoco has owned for almost ten years. $$ Nymex’s first year of electricity futures/options trading exceeded expectations according to Nymex President Patrick Thompson, speaking from the new Nymex office in Houston, which Thompson claims is positioned to become “the hub of the electricity industry.” $$ Twenty Greenpeace activists scale BP’s building in Aberdeen to install a rooftop solar array, purchased from BP, and to erect a banner reading “BP, solar not oil.”

April 2002

Despite the slow pace of new contract negotiation and award, and despite the continuance of U.S. sanctions, Libya continues to rank as the country most favored by international oil companies for new exploration and production investment in 2002, according to a recent survey conducted by a UK consultancy. $$ Brigham O&G of Austin reports losing surface control while drilling a natural gas development well in Matagorda County, Texas. The well is the first offset to the field’s discovery well, the Staubach No. 1 (Could it be “Roger the dodger?”). $$ China’s Sinopec reports plans to build 450 retail gasoline stations with foreign companies this year, as China lifts the ban on foreign investment in the retail fuels business. Ultimately, there will be about 1,500 such stations to be built in conjunction with Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil, and BP. $$ A drought on the U.S. East Coast drives up natural gas prices. How you say? The drought has led to the loss of hydroelectric power and has even impacted nuclear power generation, with its reliance on fresh water for cooling.

April 2007

In the first such agreement in the Western Hemisphere, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Patrick Manning sign an agreement to jointly develop the estimated 30 tcf of natural gas in offshore fields straddling the borders of the two nations. $$ Composite Energy, a Scottish company, commissions a 2-yr study to evaluate the potential of methane production from coal beds, followed by CO2 storage in the evacuated coal beds, thus taking advantage of the property of coal to typically absorb five times more CO2 than the methane it releases. $$ Chevron and Weyerhaeuser report plans to jointly assess the feasibility of commercializing biofuels production from nonfood cellulose sources. Chevron is deeply involved with biofuels research through alliances with Georgia Tech, University of California at Davis, the Colorado Center for Biorefining and Biofuels, and the DOE.

The Rest of the Yarn

This month we continue our look-back at the life and times of Sid Richardson, one of the “Big Four” oilmen who laid the foundations of a flamboyant lifestyle that would come to define the image of Texas Oil.

While East Texas made fortunes for Murchison, Hunt, and other oilmen, it ruined Sid Richardson. With prices for its high-quality crude driven as low as ten cents a barrel, the majors saw little reason to buy the remote, sulfur-laden West Texas oil Richardson was selling. Cash from his best wells in Ward County shriveled to almost nothing. In January 1930 his income was twenty-five thousand dollars a month; by December, it had fallen to sixteen hundred dollars a month, and the banks took every cent.

In a matter of months Richardson went from the penthouse to the outhouse—literally. He moved out of his top-floor suite at the Blackstone Hotel into a forty-dollar-a-month maid’s room. When he couldn’t afford that, he moved into a twenty-five-dollar-a-month room at the Texas Hotel; when he couldn’t afford even that, he was evicted and sued for back rent, at which point one of his closest friends, Amon Carter, publisher of the Fort Worth newspaper, gave him a room at the Fort Worth Club for free. When he was evicted from his office, Richardson set up business at a downtown drugstore. If he was out, a soda jerk named Jack Collier answered the pay phone, “Sid Richardson’s office.”

His only hope was to find more oil. Murchison begged him to come to East Texas, but he refused, since all his leases and contacts remained in remote Ward and Winkler Counties on the New Mexico border. He was determined to keep drilling, but his credit at West Texas oil-supply stores was running low. When the inn in Monahans threw him out, he fled to the new hotel in Kermit. When the Kermit hotel threw him out, Richardson resorted to bunking at a ranch outside of town. In desperation he resorted to paying his men with groceries and the promise of an eventual paycheck. During the Depression, poor-boys like Richardson paid drillers and tool-pushers ten to twelve dollars a day in oil. If none was found, they received whatever the wildcatter could come up with. Richardson, who kept a chronically overdue account at the general store in Kermit, became renowned for paying his men in bread, eggs, or milk—whatever they would eat.

Next month Sid Richardson extends his credit to the limit and then finds a new wealthy partner willing to bankroll him. (Article excerpted from “The Big Rich.”)

The plan calls for huts to be set up in the oilfields for the convenience and recreation of workers employed in those areas. $$ One of the hottest-selling business machines in oilfield offices is the mimeograph duplicator. (Boomers remember.) $$ Spindle Top has its first deep sand producer after 19 years of more or less deep drilling. Gulf Oil’s McFadden #1 came in flowing 250 bbl/day from a depth of approximately 3,000 ft. Most of Spindle Top’s production has come from depths of 700 to 1,000 ft. $$ One of the reported biggest logistical needs in the oilfields is paved highways, as dirt roads are not conducive for hauling heavy loads of crude oil or oilfield equipment, and the railroads are badly congested.

May 1926

Chemist and engineer Otto Martin constructs plant in Sand Springs, Oklahoma designed to extract potentially marketable chemicals from produced salt water. According to Martin, as many as 85 chemicals can potentially be extracted from field brines. (If only it was commercially viable.) $$ One of the hot oil sands in the North Texas area is the Swastika sand. (Obviously that symbol predated WW II by quite a bit.) $$ Shale gas produced from shallow black shales in eastern Kansas gains popularity, with approximately 1,000 such wells on production and scores more being drilled. Geologists observe that these shallow gas shales are only productive when they are also water-bearing. $$ Wildcatters continue to probe Socal beaches for producible oil, with Huntington Beach and Seal Beach as the latest targets.

East Texas crude oil - $1.20-2.20/bbl (depending on gravity)

May 1932

With possibly three more years of flowing production in prospect for the East Texas field, area geologists go on record estimating the field’s ultimate oil recovery to be approximately 2,100,000,000 barrels from 100,000 productive acres. $$ Oklahoma Governor William Murray issues an executive order to cease all drilling inside the city limits of Oklahoma City for fear of hazards to property and life. The National Guard is put on alert to support the order. $$ Reportedly encouraging signs of the recovery of the oil industry in Oklahoma are brought out in the “Five Civilized Tribes Oil Lease Sale” held in Muskogee, in which Indian land sold for an average of $3.90 per acre. $$ What are the three leading crude oil producing states circa 1932? Texas, followed distantly by California, and then Oklahoma.

East Texas crude oil - $0.98/bbl

The Rest of the Yarn

The ideal solution for Richardson’s financial woes would be to locate a wealthy partner, someone who could fund drilling that might produce enough oil to repay the banks. For most of 1933 loan officers from both of the two largest banks in Dallas and Fort Worth queried their largest customers, but neither proved interested in backing Richardson. Then, in late 1933, Eugene McElvaney, a vice president at First National Bank of Dallas, came up with a new name: Charles E. Marsh, co-owner of several Texas newspapers, including the politically influential Austin American. Marsh, like his Austin neighbors Herman and George Brown of the Brown & Root contracting company, was using his spare cash to bankroll several Texas wildcatters. When McElvaney sent him a telegram at Washington’s Mayflower Hotel, Marsh consented to a meeting.

It is a measure of how totally Sid Richardson cloaked his business in secrecy that the name of Charles Marsh, the man whose backing made Richardson’s fortune possible, remained unknown to Richardson’s family. In all likelihood, Marsh’s name would be lost to history were it not for his subsequent sponsorship of an obscure Texas congressman named Lyndon Johnson. A large man with an even larger ego, Marsh was by every account a self-important blowhard who could be very rude at times. He felt like he could do anything and always wanted to be the great manipulator behind the scenes.

That Marsh and Richardson were polar opposites was obvious. Richardson didn’t care; he just needed money. Marsh’s initial commitment was modest, namely a thirty-thousand-dollar line of credit at First National bank of Dallas. When Richardson quickly drew down that first thirty-thousand dollars, he wanted and needed much more in order to pay off his debt and renew drilling. Marsh resisted extending his line of credit at first, but ultimately negotiated a complicated deal involving First National Bank of Dallas that led to a $210,000 loan followed by another $150,000 loan shortly thereafter. In effect, Richardson has smoozed his way into a partnership that would get him turning to the right again.

The Rest of the Yarn

This month we continue our look-back at the life and times of Clint Murchison, one of the “Big Four” oilmen who laid the foundations of a flamboyant lifestyle that would come to define the image of Texas Oil.

Once his natural gas franchises were secured, the challenge became building a pipeline 150 miles across the Continental Divide to link Santa Fe and Albuquerque with the gas wells in the mountains. It was an engineering effort that would have daunted lesser men. Murchison surveyed the route from an airplane, dropping flag-tipped bags of flour to mark the route he wanted. Roads needed to be laid across canyons and mountainsides, then huge sections of pipe trucked in and buried, often in rain and snowstorms. The pipe alone cost three million dollars, all of which Murchison got on credit. He had hoped his brother Frank could raise money to repay the loans in Chicago, but their brokerage firm, Peabody & Co., ran into management problems, and Frank was forced to step in and actually run Peabody himself. Still, Murchison was confident that once the pipeline was complete, gas sales would allow him to repay the banks and his main trade creditor, the Oilfield Supply Company.

Construction had just begun in the fall of 1929 when the stock market crashed. In a matter of weeks America sank into a national depression. Murchison watched in dismay as his cash flow sputtered, coughed, and then finally stopped altogether. He couldn’t pay his workers, endangering the entire pipeline project. One week he made payroll only by borrowing forty thousand dollars from one of his father’s friends. When the pipeline reached a point seven miles outside Albuquerque, they ran out of money once more. Only when Wofford Cain appealed to the mayor to return a portion of their cash bond was the pipeline finally completed.

All through the worst months of the Depression during 1930 and 1931 Murchison signed up new customers for Southern Union, and barely two years after its founding, he could boast of service to forty-three towns in six states—this despite the weekly struggle to meet payroll. What saved him was the fact that he knew more about banking than any other oilman in Texas. He coaxed every last dollar he could out of the Dallas banks, then pushed back repayment, all but daring the bankers to foreclose. By 1932 his debt had grown to more than four million dollars, far more than his net worth. “Aren’t you concerned about owing all this money you can’t repay?” Ernest Closuit asked him. “No,” Murchison said with a smile. “If you’re gonna owe money, owe more than you can pay, then the people can’t afford to foreclose.”

SPEGCS: Special Announcement: Top Producer Awards Voting

SPEGCS TIPRO Voting

The Texas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO) has partnered with the publishers of Texas Monthly and the Best Companies Group to recognize the greats of the Texas oil and gas industry.

Together, these three organizations will design and administer a review process that invites petroleum professionals to cast their vote for those whom they believe are worthy of the title of: Best CEO, Best Engineer, Best Geoscientist and Best Landman.

Before February 1, 2012, all professionals who have worked in the Texas oil and gas industryand are interested in participating must individually register on the TIPRO website in order to receive an electronic ballot and cast a vote within their respective profession. Corporate officers may select more than one profession in which to vote. To register, visit http://www.tipro.org/index.php/about-us/ttp.

All registered voters will then be sent a survey distributed via email in late February. The final deadline for casting votes will be March 16, 2012.

All votes will be gathered and tallied by Best Companies Group, a third party polling and research company. Survey results will be formally announced in a special section entitled “Texas Top Producers, Lone Star Leaders in the Oil and Gas Industry” within Texas Monthly’s August 2012 issue. Awards will be presented during TIPRO’s next Summer Conference.

TIPRO is asking for your active participation and help in getting the word out about this exciting new program, the first of what they hope to be an annual tradition. We believe this will be an effective way to honor those individuals who excel in trades or positions that are key to the Texas oil and gas industry.

Chrysler is starting the final evaluation of its gas-turbine passenger car, based on a successful run from New York to Los Angeles. $ The price of wildcat acreage under Cook Inlet, Alaska sky-rockets to $500 per acre. (The paperwork alone costs that much nowadays.) $ The U.S. and the state of Louisiana continue their clash over offshore boundaries. (The Supreme Court is likely to get involved.) $ Iraqis are reportedly miffed because their seizure of Iraq Petroleum operating areas did not lead to the expected rejoicing in other Arab lands, while the company is being pressured to surrender 20% of its ownership along with a larger share of its revenues. $ Shell sets a depth record of 20,800 ft for the Upper Gulf Coast with its Chapman #1 in Waller County (Right in our own backyard).

East Texas crude oil - $3.25/bbl; U.S. active rig count – 1,810

January 1987

The nation’s first two diesel buses fueled by natural gas will be road-tested for a year in Tacoma, Washington, using diesel as a pilot to ignite the gas in a 90:10 gas to diesel mix. $ Meanwhile Ford Motor Company is conducting long-term durability tests on flexible fuel vehicles using an 85:15 mix of methanol and gasoline, as Ford believes that methanol is the fuel most likely to replace gasoline in the next energy crisis. $ Alaska Pacific Refining reports plans to build the first U.S. refinery planned specifically for product export at Valdez, Alaska, with the initial intention of selling jet fuel to the Pacific Rim market. $ Ten African producing countries report plans to meet in Lagos, Nigeria to launch the African Hydrocarbon Association as a forum for consultation, dialogue, and cooperation, but to not conflict with OPEC. (Yeah…right!) $ Rising demand in the Caribbean is prompting consideration of more refining capacity or utilization, and who steps up but none other than Cockrell Oil Corp. in, that’s right, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. (Let’s hear it from all you Middle Tennessee State grads out there.)

In a study on Arctic gas, two University of Houston professors report that the Mackenzie Valley corridor in Canada almost certainly will prove to be the better choice for the proposed Arctic gas pipeline than a proposed route following the Alaska Highway. $ Syncrude production from the $4.2 billion Sincor project in Venezuela will soon begin entering the 200 km pipeline on its way to Jose, where the 8.5 deg. gravity crude will be upgraded to 32 deg. gravity crude for export. $ Lawsuits against federal and state entities over disputed leases sold previously to operators but delayed due to public opposition continue to mount in California and Florida. $ Numerous countries, including South Korea, China, Norway, Nigeria and Australia announce plans to build LNG facilities this year. $ On the information security front, a survey of energy executives indicates that approximately one-third of the energy companies polled believe that their companies are susceptible to a serious violation of information security, with employees topping the threat list, followed by hackers, competitors and customers.

The Rest of the Yarn

Faced with potential financial loss due to being up-staged by Humble Oil’s proposed Winkler County oil pipeline, Murchison struggled to find a solution to his pipeline dilemma until one evening while walking down Wink’s muddy main thoroughfare it hit him. Why not offer gas heating and light to the locals? He already had the pipe; it took a matter of weeks to lay it down one side of the street. Residents would be invited to tap into it anywhere they could, five dollars a month for a home, ten dollars a month for a business. Natural gas had been used to heat homes and factories in England for a century but had never caught on in the U.S.; most Texas oilmen simply allowed the gas they found to escape into the atmosphere. Murchison was amazed how simple the business was; once a pipeline was built, all he did was sit back and collect monthly checks. When other West Texas towns expressed interest in having gas lines of their own, Murchison incorporated the Wink Gas Company and built lines to Pecos, Barstow, and Pyote. A friend in Oklahoma said his town could use one too, so Murchison sent work crews north and by mid-1928 had a pipeline furnishing gas to the towns of Kingfisher and Hennessey. He sent salesmen fanning out across South and Central Texas and soon had contracts to supply gas to Navasota, Sealy, Bellville, Eagle Lake, and Columbus.

In late 1928, after taking expansion loans from a pair of Dallas banks, Murchison moved into an apartment in a fashionable Dallas building called Maple Terrace; his roommate, a fastidious, nearsighted boyhood chum named Wofford Cain, ran the Oklahoma side of the pipeline business. The two would remain in business together for decades. In January 1929, in an effort to consolidate the chaotic piles of paperwork in his apartment and San Antonio office, Murchison leased space in the fifteen-floor American Exchange Building in downtown Dallas and, together with his brother Frank and Ernest Closuit, officially merged their far-flung gas operations into a single company they decided to call the Southern Union Gas Company. Murchison had big plans for Southern Union, the kind that occurred to few if any of his peers in Texas oil. He wanted to make it a national company, with stocks and bonds sold in northern stock markets. Murchison would arrange and build the pipelines, Closuit would drill for the gas, and Frank Murchison was sent to Chicago to begin raising money.

Next month, Murchison’s natural gas enterprise spreads west into New Mexico, with or without the necessary funding. (Article excerpted from “The Big Rich.”)

George began his career at the Amoco Tulsa Research Center in 1971 after earning a BS in Chemistry from Oklahoma State. The EEC is the most highly attended conference among young professionals in SPE-GCS. This paper contest will provide excellent networking opportunities, as well as promote project exposure, and build presentation and public-speaking skills among SPE YP members. Qualifying finalists will be notified by May 22nd; Finalists must be able to present their papers June 4th-5th at the EEC conference at BHP Billiton (1330 Post Oak Houston, TX 77056). If your paper is selected the final judging will be based on your presentation.

Society of Petroleum Engineers donates $10,000 to the Disaster Relief Fund after Hurricane Ike. The SPE International and SPE Gulf Coast Section contributed $5000 each in a one time donation to the efforts to help support the Gulf Coast area in the most recent disaster. Hiep is a senior production engineer for Shell International E&P in the EPT Subsea and Pipelines Organization. His current responsibilities include front-end engineering, detailed design, material selection, and on-site execution of completion operations for subsea wells in the Gulf of Mexico.A member of SPE since entering college in 1991, Vu is currently the SPE GCS vice-treasurer and will become Section treasurer in2007–08.
