Archie’s empirical equation is extensively used to estimate hydrocarbons in place.This power-laws combination has stood the test of time with little changes.However, it is still poorly understood and considered an ad hoc relation.Our original analysis will prove these laws rigorously, show how they must be amended, and introduce additional accompanying equations.This comprehensive model, which represents the electrical flow through the intricate conductive paths of the rock, is confirmed with Archie’s and Hamada’s core datasets.It corrects for Archie’s inaccuracies.

A thorough appreciation of the pore scale physics behind the modified version of Archie’s equation is presented.The principles can be applied in clean and complex formations (shaly-sands, thin beds, vuggy and fractured carbonates) to get enhanced values of water saturation.The theory sheds light on the role and quantification of anisotropy.

Solving for the elaborate pore geometry, we use the Laplace differential equation (not Ohm’s law), appropriate in the analysis of electrostatic fields in charge-free regions.Rock morphology dictates its boundary conditions characterized as corner angles.The corresponding particular solution (flow around a corner) and modeling tactic delineate the streamlines throughout the pores.The angles establish strong mathematical links among the exponents of Archie’s equation, the geometry of the rock frame and spatial fluid distribution.This quantitative method is lacking in previous saturation models.

The solution constitutes the basis to solve more complicated rock layouts.It enables the calculation of equivalent resistivities (normalized resistances) to take advantage of well-established electrical relationships.The extra equations compute the variable exponents and coefficients of Archie’s equation at every depth.They obtain the saturation exponent in clean rocks as function of water saturation, crucial to quality control core electrical data, and to quantify reservoirs under changing saturation (waterflooding).Therefore, improved calculations of original and remaining hydrocarbons are achieved.

Africa is facing many challenges in its social and economic development. Companies in all industries are increasingly evaluated in terms of how they contribute to this development. The concept of corporate governance has evolved beyond a company’s responsibilities to its shareholders to include its responsibilities to a broader range of stakeholders. Issues of corporate governance and responsibility are of growing importance to oil companies operating in Africa. Government expectations of the industry’s contribution to domestic economic development are expanding. Stakeholders are holding the industry to increasing standards of social responsibility.

These issues are exemplified in Angola, where the government asked ChevronTexaco, as the country’s largest investor, to contribute to the reconstruction of the country after 27 years of civil war. The company recognized the importance of taking an active role in assisting Angola in such a critical juncture in the country’s history. So in 2002, ChevronTexaco formed its Angola Partnership Initiative (AIP) to work with international donors and non-government organizations to facilitate reconstruction and development throughout Angola. This initiative heralded a shift in the company’s thinking about where and how it could contribute to the social and economic development of a country beyond its immediate area of operations.

The Angola Partnership Initiative (AIP) helped ChevronTexaco to broaden its understanding of what it can achieve as an agent of positive social and economic change. The company has now linked this initiative with its existing programs to assist local communities and promote local content in its supply chain management. This maximizes the synergies between the efforts of the company and its partners and provides an overall framework in which it can plan, implement and report on its efforts to demonstrate corporate governance and responsibility in Angola. The resulting framework offers important lessons for review and discussion within the industry.

The capture and subsequent geologic sequestration of CO₂ has been central to plans for managing CO₂ produced by the combustion of fossil fuels. The magnitude of the task is overwhelming in both physical needs and cost, and it entails several components including capture, gathering and injection. The rate of injection per well and the cumulative volume of injection in a particular geologic formation are critical elements of the process.

Published reports on the potential for sequestration fail to address the necessity of storing CO₂ in a closed system. Our calculations suggest that the volume of liquid or supercritical CO₂ to be disposed cannot exceed more than about 1% of pore space. This will require from 5 to 20 times more underground reservoir volume than has been envisioned by many, and it renders geologic sequestration of CO₂ a profoundly non-feasible option for the management of CO₂ emissions.

Material balance modeling shows that CO₂ injection in the liquid stage (larger mass) obeys an analog of the single-phase, liquid material balance, long-established in the petroleum industry for forecasting undersaturated oil recovery. The total volume that can be stored is a function of the initial reservoir pressure, the fracturing pressure of the formation or an adjoining layer, and CO₂ and water compressibility and mobility values.

Further, published injection rates, based on displacement mechanisms assuming open aquifer conditions are totally erroneous because they fail to reconcile the fundamental difference between steady state, where the injection rate is constant, and pseudo-steady state where the injection rate will undergo exponential decline if the injection pressure exceeds an allowable value. A limited aquifer indicates a far larger number of required injection wells for a given mass of CO₂ to be sequestered and/or a far larger reservoir volume than the former.

The Petrophysical Evaluation of the Haynesville Shale and its Application to Hydraulic Fracture Design

The Late Jurassic Haynesville Shale is an unconventional, overpressured gas reservoir located in northeastern Texas and northwestern Louisiana. Relatively high natural gas prices and recent successes in other shale gas plays have led a number of operators to invest significantly in the Haynesville. It has great potential for development by applying all the new technology currently available in the oil and gas industry.

Petrophysical evaluation of reservoirs has long been used for exploration and reserves estimates. New logging tools and analysis techniques have been developed to provide more precise data about target zones and bounding layers that are important when considering hydraulic fracturing for unconventional reservoirs. A processed log interpretation calibrated for the Haynesville shale is computed using a typical triple combo suite of logs. Other log data such as borehole imaging, magnetic resonance, dipole sonic, and spectral gamma ray are used to improve and verify the interpretation. Core samples provide essential data on mineralogy, TOC, and rock mechanical properties to further calibrate this processed log computation and improve the accuracy of the total shale interpretation.

Identification of the following reservoir characteristics provides the starting point for completion and hydraulic fracture stimulation design: a) identification of free gas zones, b) identification of rock types and mineralogy, c) TOC, d) quantification of effective shale porosity, e) estimates of shale permeability, f) mechanical stress measurement, and g) identification, classification, and orientation of marginal class, open conductive, and drilling-induced fractures. A number of Haynesville Shale examples will be presented to highlight the interpretation techniques and variations in the shale itself within its proven productive area. This interpretation can be critical for the hydraulic fracture design approach used on the Haynesville Shale.

SPE Gulf Coast Section Resurrects International Study Group

After a brief period of inactivity, the Society of Petroleum Engineers Gulf Coast Section has reactivated its dormant International Study Group. Originally formed in 2003, this study group organized evening monthly meetings with panels of speakers discussing the topic of “How to Do Business in (country),” focusing on the differences and challenges of working in various geographic regions.

In 2010, the newly energized International Study Group will focus on commonalities, enabling networking and sharing of experiences with engineers and managers of both National Oil Companies and Major Oil Companies headquartered outside the United States. The plan is to have foreign speakers come and talk to the Study Group when they come to Houston on business, or, alternatively, to use the latest videoconferencing technology for real-time presentations from around the world. Consequently, the International Study Group meeting time may vary, not adhering to an “every third Tuesday at lunch” schedule. Therefore, interested parties should monitor the SPE Gulf Coast Section newsletter for times and venues, or sign up for monthly Study Group email alerts at http://www.spegcs.org/en/art/?320.

The International Study Group's mission is to provide a forum for the Houston area SPE membership and the global Oil and Gas community to share information on business practices and considerations, projects, and technological applications significant to the oil and gas industry worldwide. "Invite Someone to a Meeting" Month

When was the last time you invited someone to join you at an SPE Gulf Coast Section event? I’m ashamed to say, I haven’t done so either.

When I moved to Houston, it took me a long time to find my way back to SPE. I was very active with SPE Delta Section in New Orleans, but when I came to Houston, the GCS was daunting. I went from a Section with one meeting a month to a Section with ten to fifteen. Which one do I attend? What do you mean it is an hour drive to get there?

I read that 70% of people who joined a church did so because they were brought by a friend or relative. I wonder what percentage of SPE members were introduced to SPE by a coworker, friend, or relative. How did you find your way to your first GCS meeting? Did someone invite you or better yet, did they take you?

There are so many people moving in and out of Houston—from transfers to new hires. Are we actively grabbing opportunities to bring them to SPE...or bring them back to SPE? If you ask someone down the hall to join you at a meeting, you might find out he was active in another Section. What better way to make him feel welcome than to introduce him to friends and acquaintances at a study group—a little “vintage social networking.” If he isn’t already a member, what better way to introduce them to the benefits of SPE!

Don’t limit yourself to just your coworkers. Have you considered SPE meetings as a tool to help your spouse or son or daughter or parent understand what you do? If we bring our daughters to work, then why can’t we bring them to an SPE event? I took my mother to ATCE one year where she learned more about the industry than I had taught her in 30 years.

For those who haven’t found a study group home, I’m inviting you. Call me or any of the GCS leadership listed in the back of this newsletter, and we’ll put you in touch with a study group that fits your interests or give you an SPE contact in your office that will help you find one. Study groups can bring unanticipated benefits such as meeting someone you didn’t know you needed to meet or finding others who share your hobbies or interests. Synergies and serendipities happen.

I’m declaring March, “Invite Someone to a Meeting” Month. Let each of us commit to inviting someone new to join us.

Perforating Guns Atlas Corp. reports the development of a new radioactive well logging method which gives both a gamma ray and a neutron log from one instrument in a single run in the hole. (The key is slow-neutron detection.) $ Texas Tech’s petroleum engineering department reports plans to drill a duster on its campus in Lubbock. (That’s right….They are hoping for a dry hole so the students can use the wellbore for their experiments without being bothered by messy crude oil.) $ The U.S. Air Force makes great strides in refueling planes in flight using a new telescopic tube that can be poked into the filling spout by an attendant on a flying tanker. (How come no one has ever conceived of a mobile refueling/recharging system for automobiles?) East Texas crude oil - $2.65/bbl

March 1970
Efforts to remove lead from gasoline continue to indicate that such a change will cause automobiles to suffer a 10% loss in efficiency from compression-ratio reduction plus another 10% loss from the installation of exhaust-gas devices. $ As Cuba’s fledgling oil industry continues to flounder, a new trade protocol signed with Russia provides for a significant increase in delivery of fuel oil and other petroleum products to the Castro government. (What could possibly be in it for the Russians?) $ Union Oil’s one-legged platform or monopod is judged a success after 3 years of operation in Cook Inlet. (Can a spar platform be far behind?) $ The U.S. active rig count drops below 1,000 for the first time since 1943, as the count drops 40 rigs in one week.

Illinois environmental officials hike the estimate of an oil spill from a ruptured pipeline at Shell’s Wood River, Illinois refinery from early estimates of 1,000 bbl to 16,000 bbl. $ Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) is closing in on its goal of sales of 1 million bbl/d of Orimulsion, its extra heavy crude-30% water-emulsifier mix it hopes will compete with coal and fuel oil. $ The DOE is negotiating with the Soviet Union to expand cooperative efforts in energy research and development, energy data exchange, and service and supplies imports/exports. $ BP reportedly will cap a major reshaping of the company with a reorganization that will more than halve the staff at its London headquarters.

The Rest of the Yarn
This month we continue our look back at some of the famous (and infamous) historical sites in Houston which had connections with the oil industry.

Designed by renowned architect Alfred C. Finn, the Gulf Building at Main and Rusk is one of the finest Art Deco skyscrapers in the Southwest. The site was once the home of Mrs. Charlotte Allen, the “Mother of Houston,” wife of Houston founder Augustus Chapman Allen. Once the corporate headquarters of Gulf Oil, it reportedly cost $3.5 million to build. When completed, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi.

Now listed in the National Registry of Historical Places, the Gulf Building no longer soars above the skyline, but its grandeur lives on. A number of interesting elements have been added over the years, including two annexes, an industrial-grade telescope, a heliport, and a fifty-foot “Gulf lollipop” neon logo (no longer standing, much to the relief of many). It remains a brilliant, elegant sight especially at night. And now you know…The Rest of the Yarn. (Article excerpted from “Houston Then & Now.”)

Distinguished Lecturer Ted Frankiewicz - Diagnosing and Resolving Produced Water Chemical and Mechanical Problems

Ted Frankiewicz has more than 30 years' experience with Occidental Petroleum, Unocal Corp., Natco Group, and, currently, SPEC Services. He has a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Chicago, holds 15 patents, and has written more than 25 professional publications. At Unocal, he was responsible for developing the water treatment systems that were installed in the Gulf of Thailand to remove mercury and arsenic as well as residual oil from produced water. At Natco Group he developed an effective vertical column flotation vessel design and used CFD to diagnose problems with existing water treatment equipment, as well as designed new equipment. His combined expertise in oilfield chemistry, the design of process equipment, and the development of process systems has provided him with unique insights into the issues that challenge operators as their water production and water treatment costs escalate over time.

Description of presentation:

Global production of produced water is nearly 90 billion barrels per year. This water is generally considered to be a non-revenue fluid, yet it can have considerable value as an enhancer of oil production. Produced water needs to be handled and treated effectively to minimize injection or disposal costs and meet environmental requirements. In this talk, three interactive aspects of produced water treatment will be discussed: water chemistry; process hardware; and chemical treatment. To design new water treatment systems or to diagnose problems with existing systems, basic tenets must be followed: know the contaminants to be removed; avoid process recycle streams; and compensate for upstream process operations and chemical injection. The successful use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to design water treatment equipment will be illustrated. In addition, the diagnosis and resolution of actual, challenging water treatment problems will be discussed as examples of how the application of fundamental information can be used beneficially, thus saving time, money, and aggravation for operating companies.

The key message is that in order to design and operate a water treatment system that performs reliably and effectively, it is essential to understand and integrate the fundamentals of system chemistry, process operations, and equipment design.

Awards and Nominations

GCS membership and especially the leadership of our committees, study groups, and board, I challenge you. I challenge you to recognize those who have been leaders in technology and service to SPE in the energy capital of the world by placing them in nomination for SPE regional and international awards and/or Distinguished Lecturer.

The Nominations Committee led by GCS Past Chair Bill Bowers will collect nominations for international and regional awards this month. Any member can nominate a deserving candidate either through the Nominations Committee or directly to SPE. Details on awards and how to submit a nomination can be found on pp. 3–4 in this newsletter and at www.spe.org. Deadlines are February 1 for Distinguished Lecturers and February 15 for the special awards.

Study Groups - You are the forefront for GCS technology dissemination. Your speakers and your attendees include leaders in technology, and many in your ranks have been long term significant contributors to SPE activities. Some of your speakers would be excellent Distinguished Lecturers. My challenge is to have one nomination from each study group.

Committees - How many in your ranks have been significant SPE contributors? My challenge is at least one nomination from each Coordinator's group of committees.

Officers and Directors - You have had a bird’s eye view of the study groups, committees, and international organization for an extended period. I challenge you as a group to submit two nominations to the Nominations Committee.

General Membership - I challenge you as a group to submit a nomination for each of the awards as well as one Distinguished Lecturer.

Hesitant? Don’t know how? Afraid the paperwork will be daunting? It’s not difficult. If the nominee has a resume, you have much of the needed information already done. The Nominating Committee is here to help, and www.spe.org has detailed, easy-to-follow instructions.

Don’t want to forward a nomination to the Nominating Committee? Then you can nominate someone yourself directly at www.spe.org.

Nominee not an SPE member? Some of the technical awards do not require SPE membership, but what a great opportunity to share with them the benefits of being an SPE member.

Are you ready to take on the challenge? If so, more detailed information on Distinguished Lecturer nominations can be found on p. 4 and awards nominations on p. 5. Although the award deadline is February 15, if you plan to nominate through the Nominations Committee, please forward your recommendations well in advance of the deadline.

A salt mine cave-in 10 miles southwest of Houston swallows up a warehouse-office building and a salt-press building, while a nearby operator reports increased gas production following the cave-in. $ Core laboratories of this era now include such “modern” test equipment as mercury capillary pressure instruments, Boyle’s Law porosimeters, permeameters, flood pots, and resistivity equipment for approximating formation resistivity factors for use in electric log interpretation. $ One year ago, the slogan for Scurry County, Texas was “Scurry CountyWhere Farmers Ranch and Ranchers Farm.” This year, with 180 drilling wells, it’s “Scurry CountyWhere the Oil Flows and Cotton Grows.” $ Substantial oil production is reported in southern Vera Cruz, Mexico by the Mexican American Independent Oil Company. Libya ends its 14-month-long oil embargo on crude oil shipments to the U.S. (Its 10-year-low oil production levels may have compromised Libya’s political posture.) $ The government of Venezuela decides to take 99% of Venezuela’s largest oil producer, Exxon affiliate Creole Petroleum Company’s, profits from last year. (Can’t blame this one on Hugo.) $ The Iraqi Government is preparing to “negotiate” a take-over of the remaining foreign holdings in Basrah Petroleum Company. (Yes, Saddam had his finger in it.)

In a watershed agreement signifying a possible thaw in Middle East relations, Egypt agrees to sell natural gas to Israel through what is being called a “pipeline of peace.” $ McMoRan and Texaco ink an agreement giving McMoRan the right to explore all of Texaco’s 90 tracts on the Outer Continental Shelf, leaving Texaco to focus on its deepwater program. $ The U.S. natural gas industry expects to reap the benefits of a recent court ruling that upholds an EPA rule prohibiting the use of lignite fuel in new power plants. $ In an effort to assist its UK business customers in managing their gas portfolios more efficiently, BP Amoco launches an internet-based gas trading service called “e-EnergyTrade.”

The Rest of the Yarn
This month we continue our look back at some of the famous (and infamous) historical sites in Houston which had connections with the oil industry.

The Kennedy Bakery is recognized as Houston’s oldest commercial building still standing on its original site. Nathaniel Kellum built the structure in 1847 and in 1860 John Kennedy, an Irish baker, moved into the narrow structure at 813 Congress. Kennedy was an Irish immigrant who came to Houston in 1842. Poor when he arrived, the hardworking Irishman quickly amassed his own Houston bakery, gristmill, retail store, and several thousand acres.

During the Civil War, Kennedy used his bakery to make hardtack for Confederate soldiers. It passed from the Kennedy family in 1970 and is now La Carafe, considered to be Houston’s oldest bar, and the site where many an oil deal was first outlined on a bar napkin. Its wine selection and atmosphere prompted one magazine to name it one of America’s finest bars. Some say the building is haunted, complete with exploding bottles, eerie shadows, and cold spots. Mike Eberhard has been with Halliburton for more than 26 years. He has spent his entire career in pumping services including cementing, acidizing, and hydraulic fracturing. He has worked in the Williston Basin, Bakersfield, CA., Brighton, CO. and lastly Denver, CO. During this time, he held various engineering and technical sales positions. In 1996 he transferred to Denver as part of the Halliburton “Tech Team.” The main charge of the Tech Team is working with operators toward drilling and completion optimization. Currently, Eberhard is the Technical Manager for Halliburton’s Rocky Mountain Area. He is a graduate of Montana State University with a BS degree in mechanical engineering, and is a registered professional engineer. He is the past Section Chairman for the Denver Section of SPE, and has helped manage several technical meetings and ATWs. He is author or co-author of 11 SPE papers and several industry articles.

Description of presentation:

In tight gas sand provinces such as the Rocky Mountain region of North America, more than 90 percent of new wells require hydraulic fracturing to be economic. With the growing development of marginal multiple pay tight gas sands, economic completions have become more difficult. Continued improvements in evaluation and completion technologies for multiple pay intervals is essential to meet an operator’s economic criteria. For operators with a large drilling program, one solution has been the development of a “factory” approach to drilling and completing wells. While this approach provides economic benefit in reducing cycle time and economy-of-scale savings, it is not without complication. Some factors that affect the economic optimization of a well completion for the factory approach are:

Determining well productivity from logs
Completing multiple pay intervals during the initial completion process
Determining which multiple-pay fracture treatment technique to use
Timely fracture treatment recommendations for a high volume of work
Evaluating production results and adopting improvements

This presentation will discuss how these five factors are currently being addressed, with focus on the Rockies. The overall process will be reviewed as a holistic approach to well completion and optimization. The presentation will emphasize the different completion techniques being used throughout the Rockies. Operational difficulties of high volume operations also will be discussed. Actual case study data will be presented showing the benefits of this approach.

People attending this presentation will become very familiar with the variety of different fracturing techniques being used in completing multiple pay tight gas sands.

Qualifying finalists will be notified by May 22nd; Finalists must be able to present their papers June 4th-5th at the EEC conference at BHP Billiton (1330 Post Oak Houston, TX 77056). SPE Gulf Coast Section supports Greater Houston Red Cross Hurricane Recovery

Society of Petroleum Engineers donates $10,000 to the Disaster Relief Fund after Hurricane Ike. The SPE International and SPE Gulf Coast Section contributed $5000 each in a one time donation to the efforts to help support the Gulf Coast area in the most recent disaster. I have held internships with Chief Oil and Gas in Dallas, Tx where I spent half of the summer in the field watching horizontal gas wells being drilled in the Barnett Shale. The second half of the summer was spent working on projects in the office.

Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

The Houston Arboretum is a 155 acre nature sanctuarywith a mission to educate people about the environment and to protect and preserve the native plants and animals here. A group of Young Professionals will be out bright and early at 8 am on Saturday, March 20 to participate in a project such as trail resurfacing, non-native plant removal or native plant replanting.

President Fattahi delivered an impromptu presentation on the key themes of his presidency and answered questions from the attendees. As the SPE Gulf Coast Section Chair, I delivered an update on activities in the section. A booklet of volunteers in section committees and study groups was distributed. The SPE Real Time Operations Technical Interest Group (RTO TIG) is interested in learning more about the barriers to implementation of real time operations technology. We would appreciate your input.
