Horizontal drillling has become common practice in today’s unconventional fracture and shale plays. Advances in drill bit technology, measurement while drilling, and geosteering have allowed operators to more efficiently drill in reservoirs that were once considered too risky or uneconomic to drill. Advances in completion technology have also helped make these high risk plays an economic venture.

Geosteering, in particular, is critical in keeping the drill bit in the target zone. Numerous different methods have been established to geosteer horizontal wells with each one bringing its own set of advantages and limitations. Each method must balance its value against project economics, which can be difficult as the operator and service provider can view that value differently. In this type of environment, operators and service providers must take a multi-disciplinary approach to maximize safety, minimize costly errors, and ultimately ensure project success.

Evolution has prepared human beings very poorly for making decisions in an uncertain business environment. Humans – and some other primates – are frequently illogical when comparing economic alternatives. How a problem is framed can make a huge difference in the decisions people make, even when the economic outcomes are identical. Most people are risk-averse when considering potential gains, but risk-seeking when faced with potential losses (the “double-or-nothing” effect), leading to sub-optimal portfolios of assets and projects.

Decisions often set off a conflict between the region of one’s brain that deals with logical reasoning and a more visceral, emotional region – but when the emotional part is incapcitated, we become horribly indecisive. There is no magic formula for overcoming these weaknesses, but being aware of them is a necessary first step. This presentation is a brief tour of human psychological weaknesses when making decisions in the face of uncertainty – and the implications for managers and employees.

This presentation examines issues with forecasting and evaluating production from unconventional gas reservoirs, such as the Barnett Shale. A key factor in economic shale-gas development is maximizing the reservoir area that is connected to the wellbore by creating a very large man-made fracture network. The fractures created in many shale-gas reservoirs are far from the classic planar model; they are large complex flow networks. For a given matrix permeability and pressure, gas production will be determined by the number and complexity of fractures created, their effective conductivity, and the ability to effectively reduce the pressure throughout the fracture network to initiate gas production. Understanding the relationship between fracture complexity, fracture conductivity, matrix permeability, and gas recovery is a fundamental challenge of shale-gas development. This presentation highlights the application of reservoir simulation to model production in shale-gas reservoirs, providing significant insights into these relationships that can improve stimulation designs, completion practices, and field development strategies. Examples from the Barnett Shale that incorporate microseismic fracture mapping and production data are used to illustrate the applications of production modeling to evaluate well performance in shale-gas reservoirs. Currently, most shale gas resources are developed using horizontal wells and thus the presentation focuses on horizontal completions. This presentation also highlights type-curve analysis techniques that aid in evaluating stimulation and completion effectiveness, providing important insights that can lead to improvements in both well productivity and ultimate recovery from shale-gas reservoirs.

Continuous Well Monitoring Using Distributed Temperature Systems

In the industry, temperature logs are obtained by logging wells with thermal sensors. These discreet sensors are point sensors, typically either deployed at fixed depths or dipped in. Distributed temperature sensing systems (DTS) allow continuous monitoring of wells over the length of the well and are used as permanent monitoring systems, dip-in logs, and diagnostic tools.

DTS are optoelectronic interrogators that provide a continuous temperature measurement along optical fibers. DTS systems send laser light down a fiber and analyze embedded signals in the light to derive temperature information. The sensor is the fiber itself, which is deployed in the well by various methods. Aside from the top-side interrogator, DTS systems do not have any electronics, electrical wires or electrical connections along the line, thus making the system intrinsically safe for harsh environments.

This presentation will cover the applications of DTS, the various types of DTS techniques, choices of fibers for the specific environment, cable configurations, and environmental impacts to consider before deploying a DTS system. The presentation will also cover single-ended vs dual-ended interrogation techniques and data correction techniques. Also discussed will be data interpretation and case histories demonstrating how these techniques have enabled operators to monitor and diagnose well behavior, analyze temperature data, make operational decisions and apply corrective actions as needed.

In May 2010, the U.S. Department of the Interior recommended a safety case regime (and other measures) to increase safety for deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. In September 2010, a final interim recommendation is expected from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (BOE; formerly the Minerals Management Service, MMS). The International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) is developing U.S. Guidance on HSE Case Bridging Documents.

Please join the SPE Gulf Coast Section Safety and Environment Study Group for an informative, lively discussion about the possible requirement of safety cases for U.S. offshore drilling. Panelists will include leaders from industry associations, the drilling industry, oil and gas exploration, and safety case experts.

The moderated discussion will pose some tough questions – both prepared and live from the audience. For example, should a safety case regime be brought to U.S. offshore drilling? If so, should it mirror other safety case regulatory regimes (such as Australia, Cuba, Denmark, Faeroe Islands, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom) or should it be a U.S. invention? Should safety case implementation be voluntary and self-regulated? If not, what are the alternatives?

Abstract:

Cementing is an important step during well construction since the resulting annular cement sheath is expected to provide zonal isolation for the lifetime of the well.

A cement slurry is usually pumped from the surface through the casing to the bottom of the borehole and from there into the annular space between casing and formation. Depending on the well conditions (such as depth, temperature, pressure, salinity), various chemical additives (e.g. retarders, dispersants, fluid loss additives) are required to adjust the complex slurry properties.

Chemical additive systems have to be carefully designed to provide optimum results within the cement slurry. Additive overloading not only affects economics negatively but also can cause incompatibilities within combinations of additives. This reduces additive effectiveness and can, in the worst case, even lead to complete failure of a cement system.

Therefore it is necessary to understand how cement additives work and to develop guidelines for optimum compatibility and more economical use of additives.

How does Servitude Leadership relate to teamwork? It does not take much effort to identify great teams around us, whether in sports or in business. What is interesting is noting how quickly these teams can change from great to mediocre and vice versa. I believe that a part of this change is due to the willingness of members to humble themselves for the good of the whole. A favorite quote of mine that personifies this message is by Edward Everett Hale who said, “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” Your Gulf Coast Section is a great example of teamwork. Hundreds of volunteers work tirelessly, most often on their own time, to provide world-class technical knowledge to our membership while reaching out into the community to help support and encourage our youth to seek higher education and, perhaps, a career within our industry.

For the long-term goals of our section, we want to achieve operational excellence and financial excellence and to strengthen our relationship with the International organization of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. We will strive to attain operational excellence within our technical programming, education and community outreach, and social events. We plan to achieve financial excellence through the creation and implementation of governance policies and procedures that require us to be fiscally responsible stewards of our assets. Because we believe that a strong relationship with SPE International is important because of the size and strength of our section as it relates to others, we plan to seek out collaborative projects and provide knowledge transfer of successful programs, events, and projects to SPEI and other sections.

There are numerous specific short-term goals for the 2010-2011 year available for review on our website at www.spegcs.org. Goals for technical programming focus on study groups, workshops, and technology transfer. The goals of the study groups involve maintaining the 95 study group meetings held each year and increasing attendance by 10 percent, from 65 to 72 attendees per event, with a breakeven financial target. The goal of the growth area for the section is to add three additional workshops, symposiums, and/or seminars to the 11 completed last year with a 20 percent net income target. It is possible for oil interests and ecological interests to coexist, as witnessed by a recent compromise between West Coast oil interests, the U.S. Forest Service, the Interior Department, and the Audubon Society. Under an agreement that was reached between these groups, drilling in the Los Padres National Forest in Ventura County, California, home of the 60 remaining California condors, could proceed as long as those operations were conducted relatively quietly and at least half a mile from the nearest condor nest. (See … it can be done!) $ Add polar exploration to the list of sciences benefitting from the oil industry and its wondrous equipment. The American Geographical Society has chosen an Eastman Oil Well Survey Co. instrument to measure the drift of the Juneau ice cap in Alaska.

The border war may be on, as Mobil drills a rank wildcat 6 miles north of the metropolis of Telephone, Texas and just 660 ft from the Oklahoma border. (That hold better be straight or there are going to be problems!) $ Meanwhile, further to the north, Oklahoma’s Anadarko Basin has three wildcats drilling below 20,000 ft. $ The Iraqi Union of Oil and Mineral Workers warns that members would destroy all imperialistic oil installations if Middle East peace is achieved under the U.S. plan. $ Despite no drilling in the area in the past 15 years, Texaco reports plans to drill a wildcat in central Florida, 6 miles northeast of Wewahotee. (Sounds like a word out of a John Wayne movie.)

The threat of war with Iraq pushes oil prices above $30 per bbl. $ Pennzoil and Snyder Oil announce plans to jointly participate in a Niobrara play in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming, which may include horizontal drilling. (It looks like they were ahead of the peloton.) $ Venezuela’s state-owned Pdvsa authorizes its Citgo unit to negotiate purchase of 50% of New Jersey refiner Seaview Petroleum. (Beware … Hugo is spreading his wings!) $ Greece announces plans to end its state monopoly on oil and gas exploration and invites participation by Greek and foreign private companies. Greece’s only production at present is in the northern Aegean Sea. (I’ll volunteer for that duty!)

The Rest of the Yarn
A syndicated cartoonist for many years, including a weekly entry in the Oil and Gas Journal in the 1950’s, he made fame and fortune thanks to his goofy inventions, bizarre statues, and similarly incongruous and impossible drawings. His name became a household word and is still a synonym for an odd mechanical contraption. Later in his career he decided to turn to higher things, dropped his inventions cold, and devoted himself to serious political cartooning. He did so well at it that he won a Pulitzer Prize. But his suppressed mechanical genius cried out for an outlet, so he began putting it to work identifying cause-and-effect relationships in the news events every week. Again he succeeded, but regardless, he will forever be identified with his odd mechanical contraptions. He was Rube Goldberg. And now you know … The Rest of the Yarn.

As the incoming GCS Chair, I’d like to give my sincerest appreciation and thanks to the outgoing directors and officers on the Section board which are: Bill Bowers, Past Chair; Jim Montagna, Treasurer; Hiep Vu, career management; Regina Eco, communications; Claude Thorp, membership; Steve Wolhart, technology transfer; Vivian bust, director at large; and Stuart Scott, director at large. I’d also like to acknowledge the leadership of Jane Moring this past year, I’ve learned much from her during this time and am glad she will be supporting me on the board as past Chair. Lastly, Bill Bowers, you will be missed greatly.

One of the primary mission of SPEI and our section is to disseminate technology, both internally and externally. Internally, we provide forums, workshops, and study groups for our membership. Externally, we reach out and share this technology message to the community via scholarships, community services projects, and teacher training programs in order to attract new engineers into our industry. These efforts are supported through 33 study groups and committees that involve approx. 300 to 350 volunteers ( 2.5 % of total membership), which generated an estimated $1.5 million dollars in revenues for 2009-2010. This type of program can only be successful through the efforts of numerous volunteers, all committed to a common cause. Based upon these dedicated volunteers, the theme for the 2010-2011 Gulf Coast Section year is “Servitude Leadership: The Power of One”. I will be sharing more on this in the coming months, but for now a brief definition. Servitude leadership is best defined as “being equal to humility plus fierce resolve”, where humility is defined as “not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of others more than yourself” ,and fierce resolve being defined in two parts: fierce- “having unrestrained zeal or vehemence”, and resolve-“the ability to find an answer”. Thus by humbling ourselves and acting in a furiously determined way, we , the volunteers of the Gulf Coast section, reach out to provide excellence in technical content and community service. I encourage and challenge each of you reading this message to join us in this endeavor. This section needs you now more than ever before so please come and join us at the annual kick-off meeting and learn more about how you can become more involved in your local SPE section on Friday, August 20th , and to the volunteers of the Gulf Coast section, “thank you for all you do”.

Young Professionals - Call for Papers

If you are a young energy industry professional (less than 10 yrs experience), please submit a paper of a project that you did or have made significant progress on to present at the EEC. The EEC is the most highly attended conference among young professionals in SPE-GCS. This paper contest will provide excellent networking opportunities, as well as promote project exposure, and build presentation and public-speaking skills among SPE YP members. Qualifying finalists will be notified by May 22nd; Finalists must be able to present their papers June 4th-5th at the EEC conference at BHP Billiton (1330 Post Oak Houston, TX 77056). If your paper is selected the final judging will be based on your presentation.

Submission Deadline: Friday, May 8th (for the paper) and May 29th, 2009 (for the presentation)

SPE Gulf Coast Section supports Greater Houston Red Cross Hurricane Recovery

Society of Petroleum Engineers donates $10,000 to the Disaster Relief Fund after Hurricane Ike. The SPE International and SPE Gulf Coast Section contributed $5000 each in a one time donation to the efforts to help support the Gulf Coast area in the most recent disaster. This is part of a new initiative by the SPEI and local sections to respond directly to the needs of their members and help grow their community. This coming spring will include a volunteerism day organized by the SPEGCS to provide members the opportunity to donate their time and resources back to the community. Hiep is a senior production engineer for Shell International E&P in the EPT Subsea and Pipelines Organization. His current responsibilities include front-end engineering, detailed design, material selection, and on-site execution of completion operations for subsea wells in the Gulf of Mexico.A member of SPE since entering college in 1991, Vu is currently the SPE GCS vice-treasurer and will become Section treasurer in2007–08. SPE-GCS Member T. Don Stacy is working on gathering a group of SPE volunteers to construct a wheelchair ramp for a disabled person in the Houston area. Our partner in this effort is a non profit organization called RT-H (Rebuilding Together-Houston). We have done one ramp so far in December of 2009 and another on July 24, 2010. What is your GCS volunteer background?

After attending the 2003 SPE Environmental Conference in San Antonio, I was invited to become a volunteer on the 2005 Program Committee for the SPE Americas E&P Environmental and Safety Conference. I have continued to volunteer on the conference program committee, and I’m currently supporting our 2011 planning efforts. After I became involved with the conference, I was invited to become part of the HSE Study Group leadership team and was then asked to chair the Study Group.

Why are you a GCS volunteer?

I am involved as a GCS volunteer because one focus of the group is education. I find that SPE is a unique place to learn about the most important issues of the day, and I enjoy being able to help bring great content and speakers to help other professionals keep their skills sharp.

What was your most memorable GCS success?

The most memorable success has to be the revitalization of the Gulf Coast Section of the HSE study group. A great team of volunteers have willingly supported the effort and we now regularly have 40 to 50 participants at our study group meetings.

Best advice you can give a GCS volunteer?

If you decide to get involved, do something that is fun and manageable within the constraints of your schedule. I think we all get so involved with the demands and pressures of our day-to-day jobs that we can forget about the value of maintaining an active network of industry contacts. In rocky times, the network you establish through SPE can become an invaluable lifeline.
