The 2012 Preliminary – Engineering Excellence Competition

The E2 Competition is designed to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their problem-solving skills, research and presentation skills, and their practical application of math, science and technology. The top 10 winners from each education level (elementary, middle and high school) from the Preliminary competition on February 4, 2012 will advance to the final round of competition on February 18, 2012.

Volunteers are needed to serve as Judges to evaluate each contestant’s project based on four categories: Essay, Poster Presentation, Table Display, and Interview. Judges will be emailed approximately 5 – 6 brief essays by contestants for review and grading prior to the competition. This will help to speed up the on-site judging process. We will need approximately 100 volunteer judges for the Preliminary competition and 25 for the Final.

General volunteers will assist in registration, serving refreshments and other duties as needed. Volunteers must be 16 and over.

Judges and volunteers will be given competition t-shirts.

Project topics include:

· Elementary School (Grades 3, 4, and 5) – Engineering and Energy

· Middle School (Grades 6, 7, and 8) - Engineering and Agriculture or Environment

· High School (Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12) - Engineering and Video Gaming

This 2-day course examines the successful application of Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining (AI&DM) in the E&P industry in the past several years. It will start with the fundamentals of AI&DM, covering artificial neural networks, evolutionary computing, and fuzzy logic. The course is devoted to field application of this technology with focus on production optimization and recovery enhancement.

2012 Young Inventors' Showcase at Meadow Wood Elementary

The Young Inventors’ Showcase of Houston encourages the budding inventor in every child by providing a platform for children to share and celebrate their invention ideas. Throughout the year, children are invited to participate by developing a completely original invention or making improvements to an existing invention. The Young Inventors’ Showcases will be held at hosting regional showcases at local schools around Houston. Students from K - 8th grades will be presenting projects that need support as a judge or volunteer.

During the city-wide 24th Annual Young Inventors' Showcase on May 19, 2012, the very best of these inventions will be showcased and judged for their ingenuity and merit. This Showcase takes place at the Children’s Museum of Houston highlighting the efforts of Houston-area children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Winners are awarded by grade level and the grand prize winner receives the services of a patent attorney to research and request a patent for the invention.

Performance drilling has become a mainstay, with regards to drilling operations support. Although the benefits of this initiative have clearly been established, performance challenges still persist. As and example, directional drilling even with the introduction of advanced and sophisticated drive systems, is yet to fully benefit from performance drilling. Several other applications, notably large diameter drilling, dual diameter drilling, hard and/or abrasive formations, and deep drilling, still present challenges.

Discussions will identify the reasons why performances in these applications still leave much to be desired. Insights into assumptions fueling current ineffective performance drilling solutions and strategies, combined with the urgency for different approaches, will be presented. Additional applications, needing industry attention and developmental support will also be presented.

This 1-day course is a fast-paced, lecture-style overview of the fundamental concepts and elements of reservoir simulation. No equations are used. Instead, we discuss various phases of reservoir modeling, including when to use reservoir simulation, the use and misuse of reservoir simulation, elements of a reservoir simulation model, the types of reservoir simulators and their features. The course also covers coordinate geometries and types of models, managing a simulation run, defining initial conditions, history matching and prediction.

The 2011 legislative session passed two critically important bills affecting the oil and gas industry. One, the hydraulic fracturing bill that outlines hydraulic fracturing chemical disclosure requirements and two, the creation of the Oil and Gas Regulation and Cleanup Fund and to provide for the imposition of reasonable surcharges as necessary on fees imposed by the Commission. The RRC is currently moving forward with rule making and procedural changes to implement these legislation changes and both could directly impact oil and gas companies’ daily operations.

The proposed rules, Statewide Rule 29 for fracturing disclosures and Statewide Rule 78 for the new surcharges and fees and how the RRC intends to implement them will be the subject of the February 14, 2012 lunch talk. The new Statewide Rule 29 requires an operator to submit information about the chemical ingredients and volume of water used in the hydraulic fracturing treatment of a well. Revisions to Statewide Rule 78 add an additional surcharge of 150% to severance fees, drilling permits, and exception fees, along with other charges. By February 2012, we should have some details of how the Railroad Commission will be implementing these changes.

Unconventional shale reservoir evaluation and development are extremely challenging. One of the most dominating aspects is permeability, which is measured in the nano-darcy range. Although these wells are stimulated to enhance production, the presence or absence of natural fractures can have a large impact on the production results. In addition, the fracture variation across a reservoir can be substantial, leading to large production variations even in adjacent wells. Gaining insight about the natural fracture system, both intersecting and around the borehole, is crucial and can often help determine the economic success of a well and/or reservoir.

The standard means of fracture evaluation, such as borehole imaging, Stoneley permeability analysis, and azimuthal shear-wave anisotropy evaluation from cross-dipole, provide valuable information when evaluating fractures. These standard methods, however, can only investigate a limited area around the borehole—imaging looks at the borehole wall and the other borehole acoustic methods rely on refracted and guided modes that respond to an area as large as 2 to 4 ft out into the formation. The flexural wave from the dipole is one of the guided modes that generally reads the deepest and is used in the standard cross-dipole analysis. In addition to flexural mode, the dipole source creates shear body waves that radiate away from the borehole and into the formation. When these shear waves impinge on a fracture, their energy reflects back to the borehole, allowing the facture to be imaged. The reflection strength is a function of the shear-wave polarization and the nature of the fracture, with the strongest response occurring from the shear waves intersecting a fluid/gas-filled fracture and polarizing in the fracture’s strike direction.

Another important aspect is that these shear waves have azimuthal sensitivity, providing a means to determine the fracture direction. These features permit the evaluation of fractures over a much larger area around the well, often looking out in excess of 60 ft from the borehole and even detecting major fractures that do not intersect the well.

We will look at the application of this deep shear-wave imaging technology in several unconventional reservoirs across North America. Our review includes conventional methods and the deep shear-wave imaging analysis, showing its value in gaining important insight about the natural fracture system around the borehole.

February 1994

Industry experts predict that Mexico will face a shortfall of at least 8 tcf of natural gas during the period 1994-2010, due largely to slowing economic growth in Mexico, its inadequate natural gas infrastructure, and its current glut of unmarketable high-sulfur fuel oil which is co-produced with the natural gas. $$ How does the DOE view the future of natural gas vs coal vs renewable energy as per its 1995 budget? Their R&D budget numbers tell it all…natural gas $153 million, coal $128 million, and renewables $1.36 billion. $$ Marathon’s Sakhalin Island PSA (production sharing agreement) with the Russians is nearing realization. All that remains is approval by the Russian Parliament (OK) and agreements regarding the project’s tax, legal, and financial constraints (caveat emptor!). $$ In 1993, for the first time in history, the value of natural gas production in the U.S. exceeded that of crude oil output. (My, how things have changed!)

February 2000

The FTC’s attempt to halt the $26.8 billion merger of BP Amoco and ARCO is shaping up as the biggest oil antitrust legal battle since the government broke up Standard Oil nearly a century ago. Both sides vow a court battle that could go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. $$ Meanwhile, across the pond, the European Commission approves TotalFina’s takeover of Elf, based on pledges by Total Fina to sell certain assets, including French service stations and LPG assets. $$ The day of the “virtual” oil company draws closer, as witnessed by Burlington Resources outsourcing operations of its Gulf of Mexico properties to Houston’s Baker Energy. Under the contract, Baker will operate and maintain all of Burlington’s OCS gulf properties, which include 54 manned and unmanned oil and gas facilities. $$ More than 70 U.S. congressmen--primarily Democrats—sign a letter urging President Clinton to ask the U.N. to lift sanctions against Iraq, claiming that the trade embargo is hurting the people of Iraq, not Saddam Hussein.

February 2005

EnCana spuds a wildcat in the Columbia River basin in otherwise nonproducing Washington state. They are reportedly taking a second look at a potential unconventional gas play discovered there in the 1980’s. $$ Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez declares that his government plans to sell its interests in eight Citgo Petroleum refineries in the U.S. along with an undetermined number of its Citgo retail outlets in the U.S. Chavez stated that Citgo should be sold because it was denying PDVSA adequate revenue and because it was, in effect, “contributing tax money to the government of President George W. Bush rather than to Venezuela.” (Those two just need to drop the gloves and get it on!) $$ A group led by ExxonMobil spuds one of the most-watched wells ever in the Gulf of Mexico, an ultradeep Miocene well in 70 ft of water that could reach a depth of more than 30,000 ft and take a year to drill. $$ The DOE reports plans to budget $3 million/year to fund their microhole systems program, which targets reduced borehole sizes (3 ½ in. to 4 ½ in.) and miniaturized downhole equipment to reduce the cost of drilling and simplify access to drill sites.

The Rest of the Yarn

This month we continue our look-back at the life and times of Clint Murchison, one of the “Big Four” oilmen who laid the foundations of a flamboyant lifestyle that would come to define the image of Texas Oil.

With Southern Union Gas Company now up and running, Murchison began looking for customers outside of Texas and Oklahoma. While vacationing in New Mexico, he discovered that neither Albuquerque nor Santa Fe used natural gas. Instead of hunting and fishing, Murchison and Wofford Cain ended up spending weeks negotiating the acquisition of a small oil company that had found gas in the mountains near Farmington. Once the gas supply was secured, Murchison had little trouble obtaining a franchise to supply Santa Fe.

Albuquerque was another story. A half-dozen competitors sprang up to bid against him for the Albuquerque franchise. At a city council meeting the mayor of Albuquerque asked whether any of the bidders could supply a $25,000 cash bond to insure its financial viability. Everyone raised their hands. When the mayor asked for $50,000, Murchison and one other bidder raised their hands. When the bidding went to $100,000, only Murchison raised his hand. He scribbled out a check and left with the franchise. As they walked out of the meeting, Wofford cornered him and said, “We don’t have that kind of money in the bank.” Murchison responded, “We’ll worry about that when we get back.”

Murchison operated this way the rest of his life; as the son of a banker, he knew he could find a gullible loan officer somewhere that would lend him the money. In this case he took a train to Dallas and met with one of his father’s oldest friends, Nathan Adams, president of First National Bank of Dallas. Adams was a crucial building block in the budding Murchison empire and would remain so for years. One meeting was all Murchison needed to get the $100,000. “If you are honest and you are trying, your creditors will play ball,” he told Cain afterward.

SPEGCS TIPRO Voting

The Texas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO) has partnered with the publishers of Texas Monthly and the Best Companies Group to recognize the greats of the Texas oil and gas industry.

Together, these three organizations will design and administer a review process that invites petroleum professionals to cast their vote for those whom they believe are worthy of the title of: Best CEO, Best Engineer, Best Geoscientist and Best Landman.

Before February 1, 2012, all professionals who have worked in the Texas oil and gas industryand are interested in participating must individually register on the TIPRO website in order to receive an electronic ballot and cast a vote within their respective profession. Corporate officers may select more than one profession in which to vote. To register, visit http://www.tipro.org/index.php/about-us/ttp.

All registered voters will then be sent a survey distributed via email in late February. The final deadline for casting votes will be March 16, 2012.

All votes will be gathered and tallied by Best Companies Group, a third party polling and research company. Survey results will be formally announced in a special section entitled “Texas Top Producers, Lone Star Leaders in the Oil and Gas Industry” within Texas Monthly’s August 2012 issue. Awards will be presented during TIPRO’s next Summer Conference.

TIPRO is asking for your active participation and help in getting the word out about this exciting new program, the first of what they hope to be an annual tradition. We believe this will be an effective way to honor those individuals who excel in trades or positions that are key to the Texas oil and gas industry.

Chrysler is starting the final evaluation of its gas-turbine passenger car, based on a successful run from New York to Los Angeles. $ The price of wildcat acreage under Cook Inlet, Alaska sky-rockets to $500 per acre. (The paperwork alone costs that much nowadays.) $ The U.S. and the state of Louisiana continue their clash over offshore boundaries. (The Supreme Court is likely to get involved.) $ Iraqis are reportedly miffed because their seizure of Iraq Petroleum operating areas did not lead to the expected rejoicing in other Arab lands, while the company is being pressured to surrender 20% of its ownership along with a larger share of its revenues. $ Shell sets a depth record of 20,800 ft for the Upper Gulf Coast with its Chapman #1 in Waller County (Right in our own backyard).

East Texas crude oil - $3.25/bbl; U.S. active rig count – 1,810

January 1987

The nation’s first two diesel buses fueled by natural gas will be road-tested for a year in Tacoma, Washington, using diesel as a pilot to ignite the gas in a 90:10 gas to diesel mix. $ Meanwhile Ford Motor Company is conducting long-term durability tests on flexible fuel vehicles using an 85:15 mix of methanol and gasoline, as Ford believes that methanol is the fuel most likely to replace gasoline in the next energy crisis. $ Alaska Pacific Refining reports plans to build the first U.S. refinery planned specifically for product export at Valdez, Alaska, with the initial intention of selling jet fuel to the Pacific Rim market. $ Ten African producing countries report plans to meet in Lagos, Nigeria to launch the African Hydrocarbon Association as a forum for consultation, dialogue, and cooperation, but to not conflict with OPEC. (Yeah…right!) $ Rising demand in the Caribbean is prompting consideration of more refining capacity or utilization, and who steps up but none other than Cockrell Oil Corp. in, that’s right, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. (Let’s hear it from all you Middle Tennessee State grads out there.)

In a study on Arctic gas, two University of Houston professors report that the Mackenzie Valley corridor in Canada almost certainly will prove to be the better choice for the proposed Arctic gas pipeline than a proposed route following the Alaska Highway. $ Syncrude production from the $4.2 billion Sincor project in Venezuela will soon begin entering the 200 km pipeline on its way to Jose, where the 8.5 deg. gravity crude will be upgraded to 32 deg. gravity crude for export. $ Lawsuits against federal and state entities over disputed leases sold previously to operators but delayed due to public opposition continue to mount in California and Florida. $ Numerous countries, including South Korea, China, Norway, Nigeria and Australia announce plans to build LNG facilities this year. $ On the information security front, a survey of energy executives indicates that approximately one-third of the energy companies polled believe that their companies are susceptible to a serious violation of information security, with employees topping the threat list, followed by hackers, competitors and customers.

Light sweet crude oil - $20.59/bbl; Natural gas - $2.23/MMbtu; U.S. active rig count – 856

The Rest of the Yarn

Faced with potential financial loss due to being up-staged by Humble Oil’s proposed Winkler County oil pipeline, Murchison struggled to find a solution to his pipeline dilemma until one evening while walking down Wink’s muddy main thoroughfare it hit him. Why not offer gas heating and light to the locals? He already had the pipe; it took a matter of weeks to lay it down one side of the street. Residents would be invited to tap into it anywhere they could, five dollars a month for a home, ten dollars a month for a business. Natural gas had been used to heat homes and factories in England for a century but had never caught on in the U.S.; most Texas oilmen simply allowed the gas they found to escape into the atmosphere. Murchison was amazed how simple the business was; once a pipeline was built, all he did was sit back and collect monthly checks. When other West Texas towns expressed interest in having gas lines of their own, Murchison incorporated the Wink Gas Company and built lines to Pecos, Barstow, and Pyote. A friend in Oklahoma said his town could use one too, so Murchison sent work crews north and by mid-1928 had a pipeline furnishing gas to the towns of Kingfisher and Hennessey. He sent salesmen fanning out across South and Central Texas and soon had contracts to supply gas to Navasota, Sealy, Bellville, Eagle Lake, and Columbus.

In late 1928, after taking expansion loans from a pair of Dallas banks, Murchison moved into an apartment in a fashionable Dallas building called Maple Terrace; his roommate, a fastidious, nearsighted boyhood chum named Wofford Cain, ran the Oklahoma side of the pipeline business. The two would remain in business together for decades. In January 1929, in an effort to consolidate the chaotic piles of paperwork in his apartment and San Antonio office, Murchison leased space in the fifteen-floor American Exchange Building in downtown Dallas and, together with his brother Frank and Ernest Closuit, officially merged their far-flung gas operations into a single company they decided to call the Southern Union Gas Company. Murchison had big plans for Southern Union, the kind that occurred to few if any of his peers in Texas oil. He wanted to make it a national company, with stocks and bonds sold in northern stock markets. Murchison would arrange and build the pipelines, Closuit would drill for the gas, and Frank Murchison was sent to Chicago to begin raising money.

Next month, Murchison’s natural gas enterprise spreads west into New Mexico, with or without the necessary funding. (Article excerpted from “The Big Rich.”)

World’s first machine that makes line pipe while moving along a right-of-way is introduced in North Texas. On a project near Wichita Falls, 4,000 ft of 8-in. pipe was rolled, welded, and strung in 1 day. $ Blue Water Drilling is in the process of modifying a submersible drilling barge so it can drill while afloat. Look out deepwater…here come the semi’s, the tethered platforms, the spars, and who knows what else. $ Iraq’s fiery premier (No, not Saddam but Kassim) vows to “strike at” the three companies which produce Iraq’s oil if they don’t go along with his demand to drastically reduce the areas in the country in which they operate. $ Pressure maintenance programs spring up across McKenzie County, North Dakota in an effort to squeeze a bit more oil out of the Madison formation. (If only they knew then what we know now!)

East Texas crude oil - $3.25/bbl; U.S. active rig count – 2,036

December 1986

Despite Iraq’s continuing air attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian oil shipments continue from the Larak transshipment point and the effects on oil futures pricing remain minimal. $ Subsidence problems in the Norwegian North Sea lead Phillips Petroleum to make plans to jack up six steel platforms in Ekofisk and install an additional 20 ft to the top of the jackets to combat the subsidence. (Too bad that all of this is happening before Nolan Ryan got into the foundation repair business.) $ The EPA begins cracking down on companies producing gasoline that exceeds the established lead limits. (I understand that rather than octane choices to be made, you boomers used to have to choose between leaded and unleaded gasoline.) $ Halliburton and Dresser Industries form M-I Drilling Fluids, a joint venture owned 60% by Dresser and 40% by Halliburton.

U.S. active rig count – 951

December 2001

A $9 billion merger between Houston energy companies Dynegy and Enron unravels amid reports that Enron’s bonds were being downgraded by Standard & Poor’s, and there was a distinct possibility that Enron could be filing for bankruptcy protection. $ According to a report by Raymond James & Associates, the average U.S. well depth has increased by almost 40% since 1980. $ The number of working rigs operating in “deepwater” (1,500 ft and deeper) in the Gulf of Mexico rises to a high of 43, while 9 rigs are reportedly operating in “ultradeep water” (5,000 ft and deeper). $ Shell WindEnergy reports the installation of 50 one-megawatt wind turbines at Foote Creek Rim, Wyoming, making it Shell’s first major investment in the commercial scale U.S. wind market. (In case you are wondering, the 50 one-megawatt wind turbines will reportedly supply enough energy for approximately 13,000 average homes.)

Light sweet crude oil - $18.43/bbl; Natural gas - $2.75/MMbtu; U.S. active rig count - 907

The Rest of the Yarn

The most desolate spot in which Texans would ever find serious quantities of oil, Winkler County, was to figure prominently in the careers of both Clint Murchison and Sid Richardson. At the time, there was no actual town there. The only settlement, Kermit, was merely a smattering of houses. There were no paved roads, no post office, no hotel, and no telephones. There were barely any people. The 1920 census put the population at eighty-one; by 1926 there were exactly six registered voters. There were no rivers and no lakes, just mile after mile of yellowed grass, a belt of sand dunes, and a hot wind that blew its grains into every nook and cranny. The opening of the Hendricks Field, however, triggered the birth of a consummate Texas boomtown, dubbed Wink, which sprouted in a cattle pasture and within months was home to ten thousand oil workers, speculators, prostitutes, gamblers, and merchants to feed them all.

The new gushers in West Texas roused Murchison from his struggle with alcohol and depression. By chance he owned several leases in Winkler County. His geologist, Ernest Closuit, was already analyzing data from the new field when Murchison dispatched him west to drill a test well. Murchison, meanwhile, hit the phones. No muddy boots or windblown tents on a remote drill site for him. Clint Murchison found more oil on the telephone than most of his peers would ever draw from the ground. He first began buying leases, and by the end of 1926, he had put together eighty acres on the edges of the Hendricks Field.

One night while he and Closuit were meeting in San Antonio, their test well came in strong. Within weeks they had a dozen more just like it. The problem was, there was no place to put the oil. For the moment, Murchison did what oilmen had always done: he built two giant, five-hundred-thousand barrel storage tanks. The nearest railhead was at Pyote, south of Wink, but there was no way to get the oil there. Though he knew nothing about pipelines, Murchison decided to try and build one. A lumberyard worker at Pyote said he could locate secondhand pipe and lay the pipeline if Murchison paid for everything. Murchison arranged a line of credit and work commenced, but before the pipe reached Pyote, he received crushing news: Humble Oil was building a pipeline of its own. Murchison did not have enough production to feed the pipeline himself. If other producers sold to the Humble line—as they would end up doing—he would face a massive loss.

Next month, Murchison embarks on both the pipeline business as well as the natural gas supply business. (Article excerpted from “The Big Rich.”)
