Course Description

With the increased use of advanced drilling technologies such as underbalanced drilling, there is a need to train all personnel to ensure that the project is completed safely and successfully. Topics covered include: Objectives of drilling underbalanced, Technique selection, Drilling Fluid Systems, Reservoir Studies,Surface equipment for UBD operations, Completing underbalanced drilled wells. HSE Issues, Limitations, Advantages of underbalanced drilling, and Case histories.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, attendees will have a knowledge of the integrated technologies involved in underbalanced drilling operations; understand the operation of an underbalanced drilling project; and be able to make an informed selection of all equipment required to carry out an underbalanced drilling operation.

Who Should Attend

The course is designed for all personnel involved in underbalanced drilling operations, including on- and offshore management, wellsite engineers, wellsite supervisors and operations engineers involved in the project.

Speaker Steve Nas

Biography

Steve Nas holds a BSc in Electronics from the MTS in Nijmegen, Holland and an MSc in Drilling Engineering from The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. He has 30 years of oilfield experience, 27 of those years as a drilling engineer. Nas is currently the Engineering Manager for Weatherford’s Controlled Pressure Drilling Services in Asia Pacific based in Singapore.

In 2001 he headed up the BP Colombia UBD operations on behalf of Weatherford. Since then he has been involved in numerous feasibility studies and international underbalanced operations both offshore and onshore with jointed pipe as well as with coiled tubing.

Nas was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer on Underbalanced Drilling Technology from 1999 to 2000, and lectured on advanced drilling technology at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. He has authored several papers on UBD and CTD technology. Nas has been an SPE Member since 1979.
