This comprehensive introduction to Distributed Temperature Sensing will cover the latest about this amazing and somewhat new technology. Temperature surveys can be taken non-obtrusively in a well, and a temperature log is recorded continuously along the well depth in real time, and at time intervals as small as a few minutes between surveys. This time lapse monitoring capability allows an otherwise difficult-to-interpret temperature log to easily pinpoint production changes.
These DTS systems use a fiber optic line placed in a well typically as a semi-permanent installation along the well length. Such systems have found application in high cost horizontal and multilateral wells where re-entry with a logging tool is difficult if not impossible. They are also commonly used in shallow steam injection environments to monitor steam breakthrough in producing wells. There exists a host of non-oilfield applications for this technology. Dr. James J. Smolen has over 30 years of experience in cased hole well logging, applications, related research, and training. He began in the oil industry in 1970 with Schlumberger and since 1980, has been an officer and director of Petroleum Computing, Inc., as well as an international consultant and trainer. He has numerous publications to his credit, including the 1996 Penn Well text, Cased Hole and Production Log Evaluation, and he was a Distinguished Lecturer for SPE and SPWLA. Dr. Smolen holds a BS from Northwestern University and an MS and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
