Event Description

Today Iain’s talk is going to take us through a short history of key safety developments over the last 250 years. He will consider significant developments in a range of capital intensive high risk industries.  This will focus not just on the engineering solution but also on the human as nearly all accidents involve humans in one way or another.  Today we are faced with a bewildering array of legislation, codes, standards, recommended practice, best practice, governments, professional bodies and associations and it is few industries where we have achieved some form of harmonisation and or standardisation.  He will also explore why we continue to have major accidents and will address the increasing importance of the human element that some industries are only just waking up to.

Biography

Iain Light has been involved with making the world a safer place since he completed his PhD from the University of Aberdeen in the early 80’s. His whole professional life has involved working on projects all with the objective of safeguarding life property and environment.

Now as the Group Energy Director of Lloyd’s Register in that companies 250th year he is still actively involved in projects that have historically been very high profile and that has involved projects following Piper Alpha, Texas City and numerous other tragic events. He has also undertaken fundamental research in hyperbaric and cold environments and has published over 80 scientific papers in recognised journals.  These have ranged from the thermal requirements of deep diving, through lifejacket design and development, survival suit testing, underwater escape systems, hypothermic rewarming therapies to the testing of hyperbaric lifeboats for emergency evacuation from offshore units.  Since being with Lloyd’s Register he has increased the capability of the Group to continue to pursue the core objective by acquiring safety and risk management companies that provide safety services to the capital intensive high risk industries.

Most recently the Lloyd’s Register Group has acquired Scandpower that have a leading position in being the de facto provider of nuclear probabilistic safety assessment.  Recognising the increasing importance of the human factor he has recently extended the Groups capability through bringing in Human Engineering.
