Event Description

Motor vehicle crashes have historically been the greatest common cause of death and serious injury in the oil and gas industry.  This event will focus on the successes and challenges of implementing safe driving programs across the industry and will include a discussion about vehicle tracking.

Biography

Daniel Garstang

EHS&SR Manager for Americas Production and Development

Until recently Daniel held the position of Global Land Transportation Road Safety Advisor for Hess and was responsible for creating and establishing Hess' global land transportation road safety program.  Prior to this Daniel worked for a number of Oil and International Service companies as a consultant based out of Dubai, UAE.

 

Daniel has a background in law enforcement where he spent 14 years in the Western Australia Police Force, with the later part of his career as a Detective in Major Crime. He is an active member of SPE, the OGP land transportation road safety task force and represents OGP at ISO in the creation of the ISO 36001 (Land Transportation Management System).

 

Mark V. Trostel

Driving Safety Advisor

EnCana Oil and Gas USA

Colonel Mark V. Trostel is the Driving Safety Advisor for EnCana Oil and Gas USA Division, responsible for managing, developing, and supporting all programs related to driving safety.  Mark served as Colonel and Chief of the Colorado State Patrol from 2003 through 2009.  He was with the CSP for 30 years, starting in 1979 as a Trooper.  He began his career in 1978 as a police officer in Casper, Wyoming.

 

Mark has extensive experience in the areas of traffic safety, motor carrier safety, homeland security, and hazardous materials routing and response.  He led the development and implementation of a highly successful program for the Colorado State Patrol resulting in a 63 percent reduction in injury and fatal crashes on Colorado’s roadways between 2003 and 2009.  In 2007 Mark was award the National Safety Council Distinguished Service to Safety Award, the highest honor bestowed on an individual safety professional by the Council in recognition of outstanding service to the field of safety.  He is also the recipient of the Martha Irwin Distinguished Service to Traffic Safety Award from the American Assn. of Motor Vehicle Administrators in 2008 and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Public Service Award in 2009 as well as a multitude of other national and state awards for traffic safety. Mark currently serves on the Wyoming Governor’s Task Force for Worker Safety on the Transportation Subcommittee as well as the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Colorado Operations Council and numerous other boards in Colorado.

 

Mark earned a B.S. Degree in Biology from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and then graduated from Wyoming Law Enforcement and Colorado State Patrol Academies.  Mark also graduated from the Northwestern University Traffic Institute School of Police Staff and Command in 1990, the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in 1996 and from the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2003.
