Cost overruns can easily manifest during well construction because of unexpected issues including lost returns, differential sticking and narrow pore pressure/fracture gradients. To better plan for potential overruns, operators sometimes earmark 10-25% of AFE to cover the unexpected costs which can significantly affect drilling budgets. Technical and operational risks versus the potential ROI are critical factors in determining whether a project will proceed.
This two part presentation, based on SPE129030 and OTC 20220 reveals drilling challenges that have been encountered and the common practices that were employed to address these drilling hazards. Also this presentation compares and contrasts how these same circumstances have and can be addressed much more efficiently with engineering evaluation processes that help determine the best drilling tool and/or technique to mitigate risks and NPT. An overview of the Dodson database will describe NPT in various categories, a five year statistical review in different drilling environments and show how these metrics can be used to reduce drilling time.

David Pritchard is a Registered Professional Petroleum Engineer associated with the Petroleum industry since 1970. He has extensive experience managing and supervising worldwide drilling and production operations.
Technical skills include well design and planning, drilling and completion engineering, permitting, gathering systems, artificial lift, production optimization and facilities design. This is complemented by a background which includes evaluations, organizational skills, contract negotiation, budgeting and executive level strategic planning. In addition, he has been directly involved in management culture and process development for a number of companies.
Mr. Pritchard has consulted for an array of national and international independents, major companies and service providers. Mr. Pritchard has developed hazardous waste operations for companies such as I.E. Dupont, and Great Lakes Chemical along with gas storage drilling programs and supervision of wellsite operations for SOFERGAZ US. As an independent from 1976-1985,
Ted Dodson is a partner with his father Jim Dodson in a family business benchmarking energy.
James K. Dodson Company was formed in 1970 to provide strategic information for companies engaged in oil and gas operations located in the offshore Gulf of Mexico, and onshore USA. In 1974, James K. Dodson Company introduced the Dodson Database System for analyzing detailed oil and gas industry information for data collected beginning in 1947 through current date.
The Dodson Data System benchmarks drilling, completion and production proficiency for offshore Gulf of Mexico operations and drilling operations for onshore USA. Online Internet based database systems provide clients with benchmarking tools that aggregate and normalize key performance indicators and non-productive time for new well drills and completions utilizing the Dodson MRI Calculator® that indexes the mechanical risk complexity of drilling a well, and the CRI Calculator™ that indexes the risk complexity of completing a well.
The James K. Dodson Company also provides analytical services, studies and reports for: business unit planning applications; market analysis; Paleo database query systems; investment analysis; and trend forecasting.
