This seminar is the most popular SPE program.  The course is designed as non-technical audio-visual guided tour through the oil patch, illustrating the basic equipment and techniques used in the discovery, development and production of petroleum.

Speaker John Farina, Marty Stetzer, Ron Hinn, Ken Arnold & Susan Howes

John Farina provides petroleum engineering consulting and technical training services to the international and domestic petroleum industry. He has over 30 years experience in production and reservoir engineering, working on projects in Texas, Oklahoma, the North Sea and Siberia. John has a BS in petroleum engineering from West Virginia University, and has previously worked for Shell Oil and Sneider and Merkel Associates. John was a distinguished lecturer for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in 1989 on the subject of formation damage and its effect on well evaluation and performance and is an active member of SPE, serving on the Gulf Coast Section Continuing Education Committee.

Ron Hinn is a Technical Staffing Consultant with Oxy in Houston.  A 1977 petroleum engineering graduate of the University of Tulsa, he has held various engineering and supervisory positions throughout his career. Ron is very active within the SPE, having served in positions at the worldwide, regional and local levels.  Ron, a veteran instructor of the GCS Oil Patch Orientation, has a strong interest in sharing unique insights and facts associated with the E&P industry -- giving particular emphasis to its importance within the worldwide economy.  

Susan Howes is Horizons Manager, in the Organizational Capability group, at Chevron. Howes is formerly Learning and Organizational Development Manager at Anadarko. She has had various engineering assignments in Denver and Houston, including responsibilities in recruiting and career development for engineers, managing acquisition and divestment projects, economic evaluation, reservoir studies and reservoir simulation of conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Susan has a BS in petroleum engineering from The University of Texas and is a registered professional engineer in Texas. She is the 2007 Regional Director representing the Gulf Coast Region on the SPEI board, and has served as Chair and several other positions on the Gulf Coast Section board. Susan received the 1997 SPE Young Member Outstanding Service Award, the 2003 SPE Distinguished Member Award, and the 2005 SPE International Distinguished Service Award.

Ken Arnold is an independent consultant with over 40 years of experience in projects, facilities and construction related to upstream oil and gas developments.  He spent 16 years at Shell in engineering, and engineering research management.  He formed Paragon Engineering Services in 1980 which had a staff of 600 and was acquired by AMEC in 2005.  Ken is the author, co-author or editor of several textbooks and numerous technical articles.  He taught production facility design at the University of Houston and has been active with SPE and other technical societies.  He also received Houston's 2003 Engineer of the Year by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, and is the recipient of the SPE Public Service Award and the DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal.

 

Marty Stetzer leads a consulting practice that specializes in training design and delivery, operations improvement and large-scale system implementations.  His oil & gas career included 18 years of P&L experience with Schlumberger, Superior Oil-Mobil, Wilson industries and Exxon, in a variety of USA and international assignments.  Marty also has 13 years of energy consulting experience with PricewaterhouseCoopers.  He has worked with numerous national and international oil & gas company managements to help improve business performance  across the upstream, midstream and downstream.  He has managed major projects in the USA, Middle East, Russia, India, Italy and Europe.  Marty has a BSME from Kettering Institute in Michigan, and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon.  He is active in the SPE and often presents at other industry forums.
