Details for "Reservoir: Fast-Track Subsurface Assessment"

Mark Williams will present a workflow that was developed by Hess Corporation to perform rapid assessments of reservoir rate and recovery for exploration prospects. Although hydrocarbons-in-place are usually based on seismically-derived maps and depositional models, the production rates and recoveries are often estimated using whatever analogue data are available. These are inconsistent and subjective if the analogue data is sparse or non-existent. Assumptions are then made on initial rates, plateau lengths, and declines to arrive at recovery estimates that may not have a strong physical basis or be correlated to a specific well configuration or recovery process.

To address this, Hess developed an integrated work flow that leverages knowledge from multiple disciplines to create a series of conceptual simulation models that cover the range of expected performance. A central part of the work flow is the use of Enable to build, run, and analyze Eclipse simulation models to yield unbiased performance estimates that incorporate the ranges assigned to all static and dynamic reservoir parameters, and to ensure that all performance estimates have a physical basis. A typical Fast-Track assessment is performed in a few days. If data ranges are changed for any reason, the entire suite of models and results can be regenerated in hours.  Models can be as heterogeneous as desired and any type of well configuration or recovery process can be tested.

Speaker Mark Williams

Mark Williams has been Chief Reservoir Engineer for Hess Corporation since May 2006. He received a BS in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1978. Mark worked for Chevron Corporation for 28 years as a reservoir engineering consultant and technical supervisor. During that time he co-developed 10 in-house technical courses on reservoir management and reservoir simulation, and conducted over 160 sessions of these courses. He has participated in over 170 field studies, with extensive experience in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Angola, and Nigeria. Mark was a lecturer at the University of Houston MSPE program for 5 years where he taught two courses on applied reservoir simulation. He has participated in numerous industry technical forums and has published several SPE papers, including a paper on a structured approach to history matching complex simulation models. Mark was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer during 2005-2006, presenting his paper on integrating experimental design with dynamic reservoir uncertainty assessments and field development planning.
